Brown Sack in Chicago Mag!

Our neighborhood pals at The Brown Sack are featured in Chicago Magazine's 40 Reasons To Love Chicago. In their rundown of the 40 best Chicago neighborhood eateries they credit The Brown Sack's Blast sandwich (a BLT with avocado and shrimp) as the best bite in Logan Square! I'd have to agree, but the meatball sub and the veggie chili are right up there as well.

Black Friday sale!

If you've been living under a rock without wi-fi for the past few weeks, you may not know about Record Store Day's Black Friday event. Basically, it's a mini-Record Store Day on Black Friday. If you're familiar with Record Store Day, it's the same deal: ultra-limited items that will be available starting this Friday and will only be around while supplies last.

Because of the exclusivity and demand for many of these items, and to deter those darned eBay hockers, we will not place any of the Black Friday items on hold and each customer can only buy one of each item (for the first week).

We will also be selling the new Iron & Wine CD Walking Far From Home for $5! Stop in to check out our other sale items as well.

Twin Sister: All Around And Away We Go video

I'll be honest - this is maybe my least favorite song on the EP, and this video is pretty much technicolor puke inducing, but if it reminds anyone to go out and buy Color Your Life (which is probably the best EP from a new band this year), well then I guess I've done my job.

Autographed Emily Flake books at saki!

As most of you may know, Emily Flake was in our midst last night for the opening of her show Funny and Not So Funny Drawings here at saki. She signed several copies of her books Lulu Eightball, Lulu Eightball Vol. 2, and These Things Ain't Gonna Smoke Themselves, which are now up for sale through the store! If you didn't make it to the opening you should come by and check out her work and pick up a signed copy of all of her books!

Emily Flake in Onion's A.V. Club

The A.V. Club had the good sense to interview Emily Flake this week about her life as an illustratrix—which has very little to do with S, and much more to do with M. The bon mot that jumps out:

AVC: What’s the difference between writing a cartoon for an alt-weekly versus writing a comic for The New Yorker?
EF: I try not to use the word “fuck” so much with The New Yorker.

The whole interview is available here.

SALE! How To Wreck A Nice Beach SALE!

If the capital letters and exclamation points didn't give it away - we're having a sale! How To Wreck A Nice Beach: The Vocoder From WWII to Hip-Hop, Dave Tompkins' extensive and awesome history of the Vocoder, will heretofore be on sale at saki for a mere $23! That's $12 off the list price for those of you without calculators. Come and get it while we've still got it.

Here are a couple of blurbs I copy and pasted from the internet:

"No one knows more about the vocoder than Dave Tompkins, not even the dude who invented it. [A]n awesome book about the vocoder and its cultural impact… read it immediately."
—The Fader

"It’s unquestionably brilliant, not only one of the best music books of the year, but also one of the best music books ever written."
—Los Angeles Times

“How to Wreck a Nice Beach is much more than a labor of love: It’s an intergalactic vision quest fueled by several thousand gallons of high-octane spiritual-intellectual lust. Outside of, say, William Vollmann, it’s hard to think of an author so ravished by his subject... A hallucinatory stew of Rimbaud, Tom Wolfe, Lester Bangs, and Bootsy Collins.”
—New York

Don't forget, Avey Tare's solo new solo LP Down There is still on sale for $15.50!

saki and Emily Flake in the Columbia Chronicle

Article about saki and the Emily Flake art showing in the Columbia Chronicle.

“I have a history with Chicago,” Flake said. “It’s really great to have an event there, see friends and have a venue to show and sell artwork. I really like what they’re doing with that space—using it as a cultural space instead of just a retail space.

COATHANGERS tonight FREE

Monday, November 8th
9:30pm/21+/ FREE

There's gonna be a great show at the Bottle tonight. 4 Atlanta ladies making raucous R n' R in the Black Lips/Demon's Claw vein. The Coathanger's latest release, "Hard Candy" put out by the good folks at Die Slaughtershaus records, kicks-off with a squeal and wail A-side, then gets moody with a thumping cut called "Wife Eyes". It's a reverse attack.
They're joined by Netherfriends who just released a new LP, "Barry & Sherry" on Chicago's Lateral label, and The Runnies, who fucking kick ass.

See you there and don't miss Netherfriends at saki with Darling on November 20th!

Bill Wyman as Mick Jagger on Keith Richards

On Friday, Slate ran a piece that was purportedly a rebuttal from Mick Jagger to bandmate Keith Richards' new memoir. Typically, there was much confusion about whether it was really written by Jagger—it wasn't—or by ex-Stone Bill Wyman—again no. It is, though, an inspired piece of writing. Ex-Chicago Reader rock critic Bill Wyman told the story as historically accurately as he could manage. If you are a Stones fan, a rock fan, or just a fan of great rock writing, do yourself a favor and hang out with it.

Today, Bill wrote an addendum to his piece that's almost as good as the piece itself. It's only written as Bill, but it'll do. Hats off, Mr. Wyman.

Nov. 17th: All My Singers are Funeral Friends

Come watch Califone's "All My Friends are Funeral Singers," in fullness and completeness on Wednesday November 17th for Free. Why not enjoy some Free popcorn while you are at it?
The show is scheduled to start at 6 PM, and promises to be quite enjoyable.

Zel is a fortune teller. She lives and works in an old house at the edge of the woods. The house is crowded with ghosts (including a priest, a bride, a mute child, some washed up vaudevillians and a noisy, sight-impaired group of musicians among others) that have been there for as long as she can remember. When a mysterious light appears in the woods the ghosts realize that they are trapped and begin to rebel. Zel is forced to come to terms with the origins of these spirits and letting go of the only family she has ever known.

do you know how you can tell Americans are stupid..?

this is how...

2010 US election resultsDemocrat|Republican
US House184 seats
239 seats
US Senate51 seats*
46 seats
IL Governor(99% reporting)46% Quinn

46% Brady
IL US Senate(99% reporting)46% Giannoulias

48% Kirk

they have short-term memories, and every increasing right-wing viewpoints...be scared, be very scared...you're about 2 steps away from President Palin...this election was run on anti-gay, anti-abortion, pro-guns, anti-taxes tickets...and look what happened...thankfully the folks in Nevada seem to have seen through the bullshit or we would have been hosed...would have been 47 seats apiece and 3 independents, all of whom were Republicans kicked off the ticket by a Teabagger...
and if someone want to explain to me how people in Chicago can vote for Pat Quinn and Lisa Madigan (by a landslide, mind you) and not Giannoulias on the same piece of paper, I'd welcome the input, because as far as I can tell, people are just dumb and don't understand the political ramifications of their votes.
this is almost as disappointing as Tony Blair buddying up to George Jr...

another World Series in the books

Happy for the Giants, especially as I predicted an easy victory for them. The MOST predictable thing, of course, was that yet again US "sports fans", who supposedly love the city they root for, went out and tried to destroy parts of it last night. In the rest of the world, behavior of this sort is rooted in social issues, poverty, governmental strife. In the US, it's rooted in "yay, we won"..?!? And Americans laugh at European soccer hooligans...at least they go to OPPOSING cities and trash them! Idiots one and all....

Ghostly discovery hits the web!

If I had an iPhone I would probably have this Ghostly International app on it. But I don't. I have a regular dude phone. The good news is I can still use this app on the internet without having to touch my cell phone. The internet! On a big computer screen! Why didn't someone think of this before!?

AllMusic - Revels In Real Rock & Roll

I saw this post on The AllMusic Blog over the weekend and wanted to share. Not only do the good folks at my favorite online music encyclopedia give well-deserved nods to our friends at Captured Tracks, HoZac, Douchemaster, and Goner, but they maka'da big stink about Chicago's very own Trouble In Mind and the brand new Limiñanas record! Rad!

saki's Seance

I'm not even sure where to start! So much to take in! It's been a full day since the event and I am still not finished processing it. I can testify that The Bitter Tears have again heaped on additional months to my therapy bills. By the time the show finally started, a nice crowd of dressed, undressed, dressed up, and all in between had gathered to witness. I know there was a lot of competition on a Halloween weekend, so we were super thankful for the support shown to saki and both of these groups, who put the thing on for free!
The Bitter Tears perform Scene One from their original play, "The Talking Skull."
