Daniel Knox and Andrew Bird at Chicago Theatre

I needed this night so badly after the horrible week last week. I needed some hope. I needed to remember that people can be good, and that they can create beauty as well as destroy. I needed to remember that art and music can heal, even if only a little and even if only temporarily.

On top of all of that, I was incredibly nervous for Daniel and his band. I wasn't nervous because I was afraid they couldn't handle it or that their music wasn't worthy. I was nervous because a group of people that large can easily dismiss the opening act, especially an unknown one. I've seen already famous Jeff Tweedy ignored opening for Patti Smith at The Riviera. I've even recently seen the Chicago Theatre audience turn on Willie Nelson, with about a third of the floor standing and talking through much of his set. I so wanted Daniel to have a good experience, and I so wanted Andrew's audience to give him a chance and get him, because on a good night, I don't think he could ask for a better group. Andrew's music demands active listening for it to unfold into full blossom. On Saturday night, Daniel and his band were about as good as I have ever seen them, and Andrew's audience gave them the best reception for a largely unknown opener I think I have ever seen in thirty seven years of concert going. Daniel's set was beautifully crafted, and the quiet Chicago Theatre space embraced his baritone and falsetto like they were made for each other. Andrew's audience responded in kind. His rolling songs and voice from another era grabbed the crowd, and his tales of eye-gouging ghosts, creepy hand lotion, loves past, and the Springfield of his childhood were more than enough to keep it.

And then Andrew came out.

And good lord. I'm not a good enough writer with enough adjectives or finesse to describe his set that was at times luscious and at others stripped down to gather-round-a-mic-and-belt-it-out essentials. A single apparition with a violin backlit by a single large stage light started the set, which slowly built to a full band crescendo over the next few songs. Tift Merritt's presence only added to the gravitas and lent a slight grounded, country twang to music that Andrew's ghostly visions could sometimes use but that he just doesn't possess. (I have heard Rennie Sparks describe playing with Andrew as "like playing with a spectre about to disappear.")

Tift and the rest of Hands of Glory were an invigorating change from Andrew's normal band. I love that band, but there was something stripped down and a little more raw with this group, almost kinda sorta punk rock, that really pushed through all night. They played at least five Handsome Family songs, though in my reverie, I sorta stopped being able to think clearly enough to count.

My eyes welled up with tears at the sheer beauty of it all three or four times. I think I was overwhelmed by the fact that I can't comprehend how this all comes out of a human being's brain, how Andrew can even conceive of it and then have the talent to make it real, to put his musical and artistic vision into a concrete form that allows us mortals a tiny peek inside. And yet here it was. An accidental tour that had become this fully formed piece of breathing art of the...how many synonyms are there for the word beauty?

Poetry exists to allow words to point to ideas larger than themselves, to act as symbols, and I'm no poet. I think to describe what I'm trying to say here, I really need to be, so I'll stop.

Thank you Daniel. Thank you Andrew. Thank you Andrew Bird's amazing audience. Thank you incredible musicians.

If there was not beauty, there would be no beauty to destroy.

Thoughts on Music as Magic, The Handsome Family and True Detective

Update:
Here's Lin's on the air intro which was later posted on the WXRT blog:

The HBO series True Detective did not take us completely by surprise. It came to us with the dynamic acting pedigrees of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Set in Southern Louisiana, True Detective follows the investigation of an unspeakable ritualistic murder of a young woman. The images are haunting. They linger long after we’ve moved on from our television watching. Steeped in the mystery and menace of bayou country, this story unfolds through a series of flashbacks as contemporary detectives question Marty Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (McConaughey) about what was once thought to be a closed case. Rust Cohle shines as one of the more intriguing characters to ever grace a television screen. A vice squad burn-out with an elevated sense of justice, Rust is disarmingly intellectual. He speaks of phenomenology and parallel universes. As we all race towards the series conclusion, we are becoming aware of collusion, corruption, and a killer whose sickness we will never unsee. A show like this is all about tone and that tone is set by an opening song, a song that transports us to a nightmare.
Well said, sir. Well said.

Thanks to WXRT for Handsome Family Drive Time Spin

This morning, Lin Brehmer, WXRT's morning guy—the guy everybody in this divided, segregated town loves—played The Handsome Family's "Far from Any Road" at 8:45—prime morning drive time. Not only that, but he teased it, and then front and back announced it, talking about the Handsome Family's Chicago roots and how important their theme music is for setting the tone for this special television show. He's been a long time fan of The Handsome Family, and he finally had the chance to play them on the show with the tightest playlist on the station.

Here's the letter I wrote to DJ Lin Brehmer and assistant program director Marty Lennartz, who recently made the song available in the XRT library for spins. I'm posting this because working in this business, being assaulted by the Internet's Worst Thing Ever every five minutes, or just living life can make it easy to forget why we fell in love with music in the first place and why it still matters. Hell, it saved my life in high school. Music saved my life.

March 5, 2014

Lin and Marty,

That was really special this morning. With instant access to every damned song ever recorded, there is still something special about hearing "your song" chosen by a DJ and blasting out of the radio speakers...I always get chills. I'm not just talking about CTR stuff, but any music that has a place in your heart. Those times when it's always the absolute perfect time for Cheap Trick or Big Star or Black Dog, but you just hadn't realized it yet, and somehow the DJ just knew, and now it's pouring out of your speakers and filling the living room or the car and time stops for a few minutes and all is right with the world.

I remember lying in bed with Julia in our old apartment, having just purchased a shortwave radio so I would finally listen to John Peel on the BBC World Service. We always sent our stuff over there, and I'd hear back through the grapevine that he'd occasionally play it on his show. I didn't buy the little radio for that, though. I just wanted to hear his legendary show, and this was pre-Internet broadcasting. I could get the schedule but streaming was a distant dream. So Julia's reading next to me, and I'm about 30 minutes into that week's show, and Peel is rambling charmingly about I don't know what, and he suddenly says, "Oh well. Time for music. This is Flowchart on Carrot Top Records out of Chicago," and *BANG* the analog synths hit, and I get chills all over and shout out loud, and I'll never forget that moment. Part of me even imagines that I'll think of it as my life is finally slipping away.

This morning was like that.

So thanks.

Making of "True Detective"

HBO made this cool "Making 'True Detective'" video. It's being shot on film and the attention to detail for TV is pretty crazy. Only thing I've caught is that Cohle is asking for Quaaludes in 1995 when they were (sadly) discontinued in 1986.

The Handsome Family Go Cruising with Barenaked Ladies

From the vaults ca. January 2008:

TOUR DIARY... THE HANDSOME FAMILY & BARENAKED LADIES SEA CRUISE
by Rennie Sparks

My husband and I have a band called The Handsome Family. Over the years we've played our share of far-flung venues: a lesbian death metal bar in Oslo, the Sydney Opera House, a Belgian festival where everyone dressed in medieval garb (tights, pointed slippers, daggers), a funeral full of sobbing people... But still even we were surprised to be invited to play Ships And Dip III: The Barenaked Ladies Cruise.

Handsome Family "Woodpecker" Video on NPR Music

NPR Music premiered the new Chris Hefner-directed video for "Woodpecker" last week with a First Watch. We wanted to make sure that you saw his hypnotic video set to the song about Mary Sweeney, the famous Wisconsin window smasher featured in "Wisconsin Death Trip."
As Rennie Sparks tells us, "The gleam of glass whispers secrets that few can hear. Mary Sweeney was one of them. She was also a woodpecker."

Mary Sweeney was "an otherwise quiet woman beset by an overpowering urge." - Director Chris Hefner

Brett and Rennie and band were great, with the mandolin and pedal steel work of David Gutierrez a particular stand out. We found it interesting that they chose to alternate old songs with new ones, which means that you're never in for a 20 minutes stretch of songs you don't really know. I know them, but in most cases the audience usually doesn't, so this keeps you interested.

One of the most captivating moments was when Brett sang the new song, "Glowworm," which follows the singer's path boating through Hades to steal the light from the center of the world, or something like that. Brett sings this song in a baritone so low that I expected a herd of elephants and whales to be waiting for us outside the club

I had wedged myself back behind everybody just in front of the sound booth so I could get some whole stage shots. I had gotten those shots and had put my camera down and was just sort of digging the band when I saw Brett point out at the glowworm in the darkness. I said, "OH SHIT!" audibly, and quickly fumbled for my camera and just hit the button. I am so glad that it came in at any kind of focus. I also love Rennie's smile here.

Carrot Top Records News: New Handsome Family shows & album, Speck Mountain on KEXP, Antietam plays NY show

The Handsome Family
If you missed the exciting information on the Handsome Family's upcoming album Wilderness (May 14th, Carrot Top Records), you can read the juicy details here!

Additionally, the Handsome Family has announced a few new shows. A full set of east coast and midwest dates for June & July will be announced shortly. In the meantime, we've got two new Albuquerque shows and one Chicago show at the Pritzker Pavillion in Millenium Park! Full details of current announced UK and US dates can always be found on our website.

Speck Mountain
KEXP claims Badwater as their "Song of the Day" today! They have been spinning 5 or 6 tracks from Speck Mountain's January album Badwater rather consistently and we love their support!! They call the title track "a soulful slow burn...a gorgeous tune that unfolds deeper and deeper without wearing out its welcome."

Antietam
We got a lovely little note from our friends at Antietam HQ about an upcoming show!
In short, there will be a show on Saturday, March 2nd at Hank's Saloon in Brooklyn with PGSix (Drag City) and Ma'am (Lyle Hysen, Rebecca Odes, Charles Gansa). We've been promised at least half a set of new Antietam songs! Additionally, this show is formatted so that it is perfectly acceptable to leave at anytime, have a cigarette, get coffee, breathe fresh air, and come back inside. Anytime you show up between 9 and midnight there will be music going on and you will not feel pressured to remain in one place the entire time.

But because nothing is "in short" with our favorite Antietams, the background of this show format and further details of "the Jimmy Principle" lie after the jump.

The Handsome Family announce new record "Wilderness"

The Handsome Family's Wilderness out May 14th on Carrot Top Records!

Enter the dark forest of The Handsome Family and let the beautiful branches surround you.

Wild animals, tall tales, and dark stories from American history populate the lyrics of Wilderness. Appalachian holler, psychedelic rock, tin pan alley, and medieval music continue to inform The Handsome Family's unique brand of Americana, while their affinity for old-tyme ballads and clawhammer banjo has never sounded so seamlessly connected to their use of samples, loops, and sonic effects.

A companion book of original artwork and essays by Rennie Sparks, also titled Wilderness, will expand on the meticulously researched and little-known enigmas of the natural world explored on the album: immortal jellyfish, woodpecker tongues, dancing octopi, fly royalty, the secret language of crows, and mysterious ant spirals.

The album will be released on LP, CD, and as a deluxe LP box set on May 14th. More details on the deluxe LP release and the pre-order to come!

Paste Magazine: Rennie Sparks Shares Her Paintings

Paste Magazine asks 24 musicians about their love of painting and to share some of their work. Rennie Sparks of The Handsome Family does an interesting little Q&A (below) about her love of dog food cans and the difference between painting & writing music. See profiles of more musicians, including Mindy Smith, Robyn Hitchcock, Joseph Arthur, Ani DiFranco, and more by reading the article in Paste.

Rennie Sparks of Handsome Family
Rennie Sparks sings and plays banjo and bass in Handsome Family, alongside her husband Brett. The Chicago band has released nine albums since 1994, including Uncut magazine's Country Album of the Year, Through the Trees in 1998.

When did you first start painting?
About five years ago, long after I started playing music.

Are you inspired by a particular painter or artistic movement?
I was actually inspired to start painting by dog food. I used to wander around gas station mini-marts while on tour looking for something to cheer me up. I noticed that whenever I looked at dog food cans, that inevitably have very eager looking dogs depicted on them, I would feel much happier. I started collecting dog food cans then, and I now have a collection of them from all over the world. One day at home I decided to try to paint a really happy dog face. After that I couldn't stop trying to paint animal utopias.

How does painting differ from music as a creative outlet for you?
My paintings are always insanely joyful, but my music is usually somber and mournful. I can paint from an animal's point of view, but can only play music from a human pov.

Where can we see your work in person?
Every painting I've done has been sold. I have a few portraits of my own dead pets hanging at my home in Albuquerque. You can see tons of sold work on my website, handsomefamily.com then follow link to paintings.
