Thinking Inside The Box

Behold (once again) the CTD boxing method; a tutorial hosted by Mark Jumper of Bob Dey's Tank Engine Man.

Vid Pick of the Day: Mo-dettes "White Mice"

A while back Ed P. posted some great post-punk/new wave videos. (Which I can't seem to find). Here's a follow up to that post. Killer bouncy all-girl group, front woman Kate Koris was an original member of the Slits, and was (briefly) in the Raincoats. This was their most popular single:

Live tonight!

Gentleman Jesse's debut full-length Introducing was without a doubt one of my favorite records of '08. It's a great mix of power-pop and pop-punk. Think, Elton Motello meets The Tranzmitors. Elvis Costello meets the Exploding Hearts. Or, they've all puked in the same sink at a party hosted by The Nerves. It's a killer record from an Atlanta combo lead by Carbonas bassist "Gentleman" Jesse Smith (word on the street is he's actually a really nice dude).

I've been very excited for the chance to catch the band live. I even planned a trip to Atlanta for the annual Mess-Around festival, but unfortunately never made it. Maybe my roommate crashing the car while parking was a sign from god that we shouldn't burn the midnight oil for the next 13 hours on the road. Like lightning striking the same spot twice, or Jesus in a pancake. Then again, maybe it was just shit luck. In any case, tonight's the night and now it's only a matter of hours!

Check out this currently unreleased tune reordered live at The Earl about a year ago.

Hopefully, we'll hear that one, both side of the new Douchemaster records 7" (buy it!), and if we're really, really lucky, the cover of "Walking Out On Love" the band has been known to do.

Tonight should easily make up for the parking ticket I found under my wiper-blade this morning... (do the parking fairies go around in the dead of night tying those orange signs to trees or what?)

Support A2IM Online Piracy Legislation!

A Note from the American Association of Independent Music:

"Call To Action: Indies Be Heard - Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act

This week a bipartisan group of Senators introduced legislation that would give the Justice Department an expedited process for cracking down on rogue websites that are dedicated to making unauthorized copies of music available including the many foreign sites that have to date been outside our reach. The Justice Department would target the most egregious pirate websites, go to a federal court with the evidence, and then seize the domain name. Once a site has been seized, the Court would issue an order to intermediaries -- such as ISPs, payment processors, Internet registries and registrars, advertisers, etc. -- prohibiting them from doing business with such rogue sites.

Please click HERE to send an e-mail to your Senators and Representative and ask that they support this unprecedented legislation. It's quick and easy - just enter your home address and click "send."

Torche Ticket Giveaway!!

We have 2 tickets for the upcoming Torche show, with High on Fire and Kylesa, at The Metro on Oct. 10th (the last day of Riot Fest), to give away as we see fit!

Here's how we see fit: Just come in to saki, have a look around, read a book, flip through some records, appreciate some art, make fun of our grumpy little fish, Martin - basically, just BE HERE - and put your name in the drawing box.

We will draw one winner (with a +1) on Oct. 7th (the day after the Casiotone in-store) and contact you posthaste.

Don't forget Torche's new album, Songs For Singles is out now on CD & LP.

To be fair, you can also buy any Torche album from our mail order site, between now and Oct. 6th, and we will enter you in the drawing. Just e-mail info@sakistore.net after you make your purchase, with the subject: Torche Tickets, and you'll be entered.

Chillwave band name generator!

Part of the fun of working in a record store is making fun of band names. This isn't to slight the music some of these bands create, it's just a fun thing to do when you see so many different bands with ridiculous names come through the store on a daily basis.

GvB posted this "Chill Wave/Witch House" band name generator that's at least 10 minutes worth of fun. I'm guessing this was made by a record store clerk with too much time on their hands.

Up next: celebrity pun band name generator. I mean..., Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Jr.!? C'mon! How about Denzel Washington D.C. or maybe Olivia Newton-John Stamos?

Grass Widow Tonight

There's been some great shows going down at the The Crown Tap in Logan Square/Avondale. You know, the seedy looking place attached to the liquor store on the corner of Milwaukee & Diversey.

Well if you haven't checked it out yet, maybe tonight's the night...

Grass Widow (Make A Mess/Captured Tracks/Kill Rock Stars)

Black Math (Permanent/Plustapes)

9pm (ish)/21+

suggested donations (so don't be a cheapo, you cheapo)

Next week this hole-in-the-wall, and I mean that affectionately, will host UV Race a killer 7-piece post-punk combo from Melbourne, Australia.

Capybaras!!

Okay, I know how much you all like watching youtube videos of cute animals. Here is one that a friend posted on Facebook and I NEED to share it with you all. Patrick and I saw these cute creatures on our trip to Peru last March as we were traveling down Rio Heath in the Amazon basin. But we did not get to rub their bellies, so now we have to go to this zoo in Japan.

FYI, the capybara is the largest living rodent in the world. Adult capybaras can grow to about 4 feet long and can weigh up to 14olbs! And don't worry, they are herbivores.

SPIN CITY: THE VINYL REVIVAL
Good news in the music biz is rare lately, but get this: Vinyl sales were up 33 percent last year. Fetishists are shelling out for 180-gram editions--thicker records less prone to warping. And brick-and-mortar retailers are popping up across the U.S. Here's where to crate-dig now.

new Creation movie afoot...

Thought this piece in today's Guardian would be a good read for all of you who came to Creation late in the day due to age restrictions! Alan McGee is one of the nicest guys in the music industry. He was also responsible for my musical upbringing during my formative years - Jesus & Mary Chain, Meat Whiplash, Primal Scream, The Loft/Weather Prophets, House of Love, My Bloody Valentine, etc, etc - and for one of the best night's out I've had in the US - February 14th, 1992 with Primal Scream - which will go down as one of the most debauched nights ever, and the details of which will certainly not be repeated here! Once you've read this interview, you'll really understand what the guy is about, and that is enjoying life to the fullest. Even now he's sober (or so he claims! LOL) he hasn't lost any zest for musical thrills, and if you ever get the chance to sit and talk to him, I would highly recommend it. It's rare that I have gotten to hang out with any my musical mentors, and meeting Alan will always be up there with meeting Carl Bernstein as one of my life moments. Top guy.

It Ain't Pretty

saki is now proud to be carrying one of the best fanzines around; Ugly Things. Writer and publisher Mike Stax has be been pouring his love for all things 60s rock into the UT pages for some 20 years. Profiles, interviews, reviews, rantings, features. There is no better place to get your garage, psych, beat, punk fix. Plain and simple.

The mag gets its name from the UK's legendary cult R&B and psych combo The Pretty Things. They got their name from the man who made the BEAT, Bo Diddley. 45 year later, UT still flys their freak flag proud.

Past issues have shed light on the likes of Nederbeat giants The Outsiders (not to be confused with the Ohio combo that hit big with "Time Won't Let Me"), The Chocolate Watch Band, The Missing Links, The Standells, The Troggs, The Seeds, Los Saicos, and of course, The Pretty Things.

"Wild Sounds From Past Dimensions"

UT's most recent issue (Summer/Fall 2010 #30) includes a feature on The Kinks accompanied by interviews conducted by Jon Savage (not the sex advise columnist, though we do love us some Savage Love), a profile on The Master Apprentices (War Or Hands Of Time" is just the tip of the iceberg), The Q'65, the phenomenally exhaustive reissue review section, and much more.

"Where else could you a read 20 page interview with a band that put out one single over 40 years ago!?!

RIYL: Kicks, Bomp!, Mojo, being a complete nerd.

"It's tops."

Everything Is A Remix

Ever hear someone say, "I mean, I just feel like it's a blatant rip-off of [insert artist here]?" Of course, you have. Well, it's true, and guess what, it's OK.

Everything is a Remix is a new web series, briefly chronicling the evolution of music. From traditional folk, to blues, to soul, to rock, to prog, to funk, to hip-hop - it's all a rip-off of something else. Get used to it... and stop using that argument. It doesn't hold water.

Reader Profile: Chris Sloan of Rainbow Body

The reader did a nice little profile on Rainbow Body Record's big cheese, Chris Sloan. We love Rainbow Body's small output so far, and we hope that it just gets bigger and better. So, read the profile, and listen to the music, por favor.

Father Murphy @ saki!!!

Just added to our in-store lineup: Father Murphy (Italy) will be playing this Saturday at 4 pm. Be sure to catch them before they begin their U.S. tour with Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu!!!

Streets on Fire in-store CANCELLED!

Sad, sad news for those who would venture out to 3716 W. Fullerton this weekend... Streets on Fire had to cancel their in-store performance for this Saturday. We're disappointed, but we swear by the name of Hercules (we only have the power to invoke demi-gods) that we will reschedule Streets on Fire and they will play saki, don't you worry.

But hey, on a lighter note, come out on Friday and check out Simon Gallo's opening for "Recess." There will be cheese, and not just cheese, but crackers too, and ANTS ON A FREAKIN' LOG. That's the big selling point really.
Anywho... It's gon' be fun! See you there.

Suum Cuique "Midden"

Hot on the heels of Young Americans' excellent Daphne Oram compilation, "Oramics", comes this fascinating 6-track EP by the mysterious Suum Cuique , limited to 400 copies worldwide. Dark and atmospheric, this is highly recommended to fans of Deathprod, Thomas Koner, Pan Sonic, and the like -- perfect for the impending cold weather... This will be available at saki soon!!!

"Recess" Works by Simon Gallo at saki!

Come to saki this Friday for Play Time with Simon Gallo's “Recess.”

Opening Friday, September 10th from 6-8 PM.

Hors d'oeuvres and cool beverages will be provided.

saki invites Simon Gallo to display his memories of adolescence on the walls of Logan Square’s newest record store, gallery, and performance space. A native of Oak Park, Gallo’s exhibition will be available for viewing throughout the month of September. The exhibit opens on September 10th and will include a selection of vibrant work in acrylic, pencil, watercolor, and screen print

Gallo’s work frequently displays a deceptively childlike simplicity mingling with complex colors and peculiar beasts. Take a trip back to a time when we were all sure to grow up to be astronauts and cowboys, when monsters lived in our closets, and when superheroes routinely saved the world from impending doom. Gallo’s scope helps us flashback to the feeling of sheer bliss we had at recess.

Mat-adore!

We just put out three versions of the new Interpol album! There's a CD version, a single LP version, and a limited edition, deluxe, gatefold, double-LP, 45 rpm version. Crazy, right!? We don't have that many, so get 'em while they last. Don't forget to pick up the other new Matador releases like the Magic Kids LP, and the new El Guincho and Blonde Redhead albums that are coming out next week.

Aquarium Drunkard "L.A. Burnout 2: Still Burnt"

Justin Gage runs one of the best music blogs on the internet. Aquarium Drunkard, like any music blog, may not always post exactly what you want to hear, but everything that does make it on the site is always well researched, well written, and just generally well put together.

Last year, AQ posted L.A. Burnout - a mix "made up of the sounds floating around Los Angeles in the late ’60s and ’70s; a faded aural imprint of the canyons, beaches, wildfires, neighborhoods, late-nights and early mornings of a bygone L.A." In the age of .zip file mixes, the Drunkard does it best, and this one is no exception.

The follow-up to L.A. Burnout - L.A. Burnout 2: Still Burnt - carries on the tradition. This is the best possible soundtrack for your Labor Day weekend!

Also, check out Justin's Mondo Boys mixtape collective!

"I Put A Spell On You"

Fantastic.

Did you know that Screamin' Jay Hawkins got blackout drunk during the original recording session for this song. He didn't remember recording the track and had to relearn the song from the recording. It's true. Wikipedia says so.

Belle & Sebastian "Write About Love"

If you've ever met me, you'd probably know sooner or later that Belle & Sebastian is my favorite band. Ever. After a four year hiatus they return w/ their new record "Write About Love" (How appropriate), out October 12th.

Always giving to their fans, B&S have done something very interesting for us: a half hour video promotion for the album. If features usual B&S style shots, a Q&A session for fans, and an interesting round table discussion w/ some of their colleagues on the state of the music industry. Most importantly, there are two new songs!

Color me excited:
