saki newsletter 2/17/15!

Happy Valentine's/President's Day, everyone! We celebrated with Sick Fisher's opening reception on Friday night (it was probably our favorite art opening ever) and then blasting Slayer for most of the day on Saturday. It freakin' ruled!

This week we have a special surprise for you: our monthly comedy show, Freak Happening, is moving up one week (it's normally on the last Friday of the month) to THIS FRIDAY! That's great news on its own, but this month Nick and Goodrich are looking for love as Freak Happening presents The Mating Game!

Freak Happening is easily our favorite event among the staff and we'd love to see some new faces in the audience this month! Come out, bring your own booze, have a seat, and laugh at these dummies, ok? You'll have fun!

Here's a few other things we were talking about this week...

Lamp threw down an epic 50-minute set for Nick Fisher's
opening reception! We love these guys and can't wait to
hear their full length, complete with Sick Fisher artwork!

Magician, Tricky Ol' Puss made all of us act like amazed
children with his opening set for Lamp at Sick Fisher's
opening reception. Seriously, magic is the coolest.

A few awesome used vinyl new arrivals this week!

After a short wait, Sleater-Kinney is back in stock!
These knit hats are selling like hot cakes, y'all! Ok, so
maybe it's just all our employees buying them, but
still... get one today! 5% off your purchase when you
where it in the store!
Upcoming events:

Friday, February 20th @ 8pm

Staff picks of the week:

Adam's Pick of the Week: Something Wild (2013) has
the highlights that really stand out in RH's catalog for
me. "Our Song" is maybe the most truthful breakup song
ever set to a bouncy pop-punk rhythm, and their cover of
Gene Thomas' "Sometimes" is faithful to the original,
but still a surprisingly refreshing update. Fans of
Swearin', Waxahatchee, Quarterbacks, or anything in
the Salinas Records catalog probably don't need to
be told this, but this one is up that alley for sure.

Anne's Pick of the Week: As Chicago winter drudges
along, and a lack of that oh-so-elusive vitamin D makes
us all a little (or a lot) crazy, there is no better album to
ease the sting of waking up to yet another negative sign
in front of the number on your early-morning weather
forecast than Further Out. Cloakroom makes it all feel
okay. They somehow manage to be both heavy and loud
while simultaneously soft and beautiful.  It's no surprise
that winter bleeds through these songs - the band is based
in northwest Indiana. They GET us, guys. So next time
you feel entirely convinced that spring will never again
be seen in Chicago, throw on this record. You'll
be smiling (or at least not crying) in no time.

Jake's Pick of the Week: I've been going through this
phase lately where I've been buying up everything Madlib
I can. I've got a page in my journal with Madlib written
inside of a heart with little hearts around it like a school
girl with a crush.  If you've listened to Freddy Gibbs/
Madlib's fantastic Pinata, you'll already be familiar.
Like any work Madlib does, it stands up just as well
without vocals. Seriously if you're into hip hop
instrumentals it doesn't get much better than this.
Ticket giveaways:

Buy a release from any band playing an upcoming Empty Bottle, Schubas or Lincoln Hall show and we can add you to the guest list. Stop in or give us a call! Keep an eye out for announcements for eligible Metro and Bottom Lounge shows too!
