Clearly Undefined: An exhibition by Kevin Coutts :: Opens Tonight

Join us tonight at 6pm for Clearly Undefined: An exhibition by Kevin Coutts
Opening Reception: Friday, November 2, 6-9pm. Free.
Live Music from: Grimble Grumble, Royal Son of a Guns, & Randall Pike

saki is thrilled to present Clearly Undefined, an exhibition by Kevin Coutts at saki. Kevin Coutts has chosen three bands to celebrate the opening: Grimble Grumble, Randall Pike, & Royal Son of a Guns.

saki is looking forward to showing the work of Kevin Coutts. Coutts’s paintings are often opposite reflections of his state of mind at the time. He seeks to separate himself from any style, medium, or market and strives for “the intangible” that is present in things of quality. Coutts's solo shows have included Cleo’s, The Ukrainian Museum of Modern Art, Lounge Ax, Discover Cafe, Northside Cafe, and Simone’s.

Please join us Friday, November 2nd from 6-9pm for the opening of Clearly Undefined: An exhibition by Kevin Coutts. Enjoy a great night of fine art, live music from Grimble Grumble, Randall Pike, & Royal Son of a Guns, drink cool beverages from Cellar Rat, and enjoy food provided by saki. This event is FREE.

saki, founded in 2010, is Logan Square’s premier boutique record store, art gallery, and performance space.

Julia and Patrick at Lounge Ax a Long Time Ago

Taken from the Facebook Lounge Ax page (which I cannot see, so...). Not sure of photographer. Thinking it's probably Heather Whinna, but if you know, please let us know.

In the background lurks Sheila Sachs.

“Lounge Ax Retrospective” at saki Postponed

“Lounge Ax Retrospective” at saki Postponed
CHICAGO, IL (June 22, 2012) - The extraordinary response to the news of the “Lounge Ax Retrospective” at saki has led us all to think bigger, or at least differently. After discussions with Julia Adams, Susan Miller, and Mark Greenberg, we have jointly decided to postpone this special event so that we may devote more time to planning and development. We will announce further plans once they are finalized. We apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience that this delay may cause and look forward to putting on a really kick ass gallery show in the future.

Lounge Ax at saki

We got a little excited...actually a whole lot excited, and we posted a few things before we'd worked out quite enough of the details. Fear not, loyal denizens. This stands to be our biggest exhibition yet, and we want to get it just right for all of you. We are working on those details even as you sleep and will post more RSN.

PS: Does anybody know where the missing animal is?

More Lounge Ax Memories

Gapers Block has published a sentimental but even-handed reminiscence of my favorite rock club. For those of you who didn't make it before the flying monkeys showed up to carry it away, the writing here comes as close as words are able to capturing the feel of the place.

It was a dump, but it was our dump. I use the possessive here not as a former employee, horrible band member, or boyfriend/husband of owner, but to elucidate a sense that many of us had, and hopefully still have, when we're aware enough to look around and inside of us and realize that we are part of something larger than ourselves.

Rewind

Monday night my friend Susan and I went to see a preview of a new play called 'Rewind' at The Side Project Theatre in Rogers Park. Susan and I used to own a music club called Lounge Ax. Some of you may remember it, but most of you are probably too young to have actually gone to the club. The play is set in the 90's, which was the heyday of Lounge Ax. It's about a band that almost made it big. It's really interesting and fun for anyone who is into the live music scene. Side Project is a tiny little theater, but they have done a great job. Go see it if you get a chance.

People Love You When You're Dyin'

January 2000
Lounge Ax
Chicago, IL

Click the post title above to view the trailer for an unfinished movie documenting the last two weeks for one of the coolest, most beloved, most welcoming rock dumps in the world.

Given a month to close because their new landlord refused to renew their lease, Lounge Ax cleared the decks and booked two straight weeks of the best rock shows you’ll ever see and that no festival has ever come close to replicating.

After they closed, their space remained empty for nearly two years. The bar that finally replaced it is now closed.

I miss you Lounge Ax.

If you shot this video, PLEASE get in touch.
