Chicago IL, October 25, 2010 - saki, the newest record store, art gallery, and performance space in Logan Square, is pleased to announce an extended showcase featuring the drawings of award-winning "illustratrix" Emily Flake.
At the opening on Saturday, November 13, 6-9pm, Ms. Flake will also present a monologue where she “uses slide show technology to bring her cartoons to life. It’s the most fun you’ve ever had with PowerPoint™.” Ms. Flake’s variously sized drawings vividly capture the satiric comedy found in her weekly comic strip “Lulu Eightball”. At times her drawings depict clear and colorful scenes from an alternate, lighthearted universe. At other times, they remain true to the classic cartoon format of simple black on white drawings normally accompanied by poignant, frequently self-deprecating, humor.
Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Time Out, Forbes, The New York Times, MAD, Time, Nickelodeon Magazine, Globe and Mail, and many other publications. Ms. Flake has published two books, Lulu Eightball (Atomic Books, 2005), a collection of her best weekly strips, and the Prism award-winning These Things Ain’t Gonna Smoke Themselves (Bloomsbury USA, 2007). Ms. Flake has shown or performed at D Lounge (NYC), The Hideout (Chicago), Union Hall (NYC), UCB Theater (NYC), Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (NYC), Rififi (NYC), Hopleaf (Chicago), and Soave (NYC).
Her art will be available for purchase at saki from the opening on November 13th through the end of December.
