saki newsletter 2/26!

We've got some big news coming soon, you guys! We can't tell you what it is yet, but it has to do with our Off The Record listening party for March - you'll find out the rest very soon... for now, we'll just say thanks for coming out to Creative Control and both of our in-stores and Epitonic saki Sessions this weekend! Creative Control was amazing as always (last Friday of every month at saki, get on board), our in-stores with Fue and As One on Saturday were delightful, and our Epitonic saki Session with Panda Riot and Startropics on Sunday (presented by Notes and Bolts) was about as awesome as we thought it would be (read: really really awesome)!

This week/weekend we've got another Punch Up at Lincoln Hall with Flashdance and Showgirls. That's another awesome thing we've been doing for a while that you all need to get on top of... we watch two movies and invite some of our standup comic friends to make fun of them for your enjoyment! This time we've got Candy Lawrence hosting with Adam Burke, Natalie Jose, Jeff Steinbrunner and Liza Treyger on the "panel." It will most definitely be a good time and it's FREE so you should most definitely be there drinking, and eating, and laughing with us!

This Friday we've got the opening reception for our next exhibiting artist, Anne Benjamin! Anne Benjamin: Prints and posters is a collection of Anne's exceptional work on paper. Her design sense is broad and playful, drawing from the art deco, art nouveau, and pop art movements, as well as classic children's book illustrations and vintage animation. The reception is from 6-9 and will feature a DJ set from CHIRP DJ Caitlin Lavin and food and drinks provided by saki!

Saturday we've got an in-store with Audiences and Norman Toronto! We've been trying to get Audiences in here for a while now so we're glad it's finally happening. Norman Toronto is actually made up of several young men who have spent many a paycheck shopping at saki so we're honored to have them playing as well.

Sunday, we have a semi-last minute in-store with Deanna Devore! Deanna is playing the Metro on Friday, March 8th in support of Simpleton and Cityfolk, so this is your chance to check her out for FREE!

Mercurial Rites cover art
  Hair Police    Mercurial Rites
Label:  Type
Format:  LP
Catalog Number:  type113lp
Release Date:  March 05, 2013
STREET DATE 3/5. 1st album since 2008. As dirt-sodden & gruesome as the band has ever sounded, & marks an evolution in industrial noise w/o straying far from their original intentions. Tape-saturated bells & gongs push up awkwardly against pounding, funereal percussion & the kind of disembodied screams we last heard on '80s-era Whitehouse sides, & while the result might terrify some, it re-affirms what made the noise scene so alluring in the 1st place

Catalog Number:  sacbr090cd
Release Date:  March 05, 2013
STREET DATE 3/5. Simultaneously an expansion of palette & a contraction of focus, hedged w/ as much leaden dirge & ecstatic abandon, as it is genuine saccharine steel-string levity & an ever-tightening, no apologies pop concision. NO CANADA/NO EXPORT

Format:  CD
Catalog Number:  krank178cd
Release Date:  March 05, 2013
03/05 STREET DATE. 4th kranky album by Thomas Meluch, aka Benoit Pioulard. Raised as a Catholic but never especially pious, Meluch drew on this aspect of social history as the basis for the albums' 12 chapters. He notes a particular preoccupation with the ways that faith offers a sense of solace & belonging in an existence that inherently provides none, framed in a context of tradition, ritual & the notion of the eternal. Also featured are string arrangements by Kranky label mate Felix & guitar work from ambient maestro Kyle Bobby Dunn. NO EXPORT TO EU/UK

03/05 STREET DATE. VINYL VERSION. "Hymnal" contains some of Thomas Meluch's (aka Benoit Pioulard) most expansive instrumental works & fully realized pop compositions, making for a rich & dynamic long-playing arc. "Benoit Pioulard finds beauty in the raw and corroded." - NPR. NO EXPORT TO EU/UK
