saki newsletter 6/30/15!

Before we get to the rest of this newsletter we feel it's important to remind you all that we're giving away tickets for Pitchfork Music Festival! Today is the last day to enter to win a pair of FRIDAY tickets. We'll start the giveaway for SATURDAY tickets tomorrow. WAY more people need to be taking advantage of this. No purchase necessary, just stop in and enter!

Special thanks to everyone who came out for Tinkerbelles and Melkbelly this weekend! We're so happy for Tinkerbelles for surviving their 40 Walls Tour (40 shows in 10 days) and it was awesome to see them AND Melkbelly rip it up in the store. We still have copies of Tinkerbelles' "piss yellow" asparagus-scented 7" (with artwork by Ryan Duggan) and now we have Melkbelly's LP as well. Come pick both up!

We're very excited to announce that we're presenting a show at The Burlington on July 23rd with Dave Davidson (Maps and Atlases), Rebecca Ryskalcsyk (from NYC, member of Bethlehem Steel) and Kø (upcoming LP on Joyful Noise)! We'll have more info as the show approaches, like maybe how to get free drinks, etc., so stay tuned!

Here are some things we were talking about on Instagram, etc. this week!

Staff Picks:

Jake's Pick of the Week: Torres - Sprinter

The joy of listening to Torres — and there is a lot of joy — is in her words, her melodies, and the fire she breathes when she sings. The achievement that is Sprinter should surprise no one considering the acclaim for her debut LP in 2013, but the fact that a virtual masterpiece came so soon afterwards is still worth recognizing. Torres is only 24, but she writes with the courage of someone much older. She is already willing to bear the wisdom and insight that comes from her Southern Baptist roots — and from leaving them behind.

Adam's Pick of the Week: Sidney Miller - Linguas De Fogo

For fans of Light In The Attic's Marcos Valle reissues, this is another chill-as-hell summer record for sipping Sangria on your porch for the next few months. Sidney Miller was well-known in the Brazilian 70's scene, but more as a songwriter than a performer. This previously hard to find 1974 masterpiece should cement him with the likes of Lo Borges, Gilberto Gil and Valle with this, its second chance at pleasing a few ears. This was the last album Miller would make before passing away from suspicious circumstances at age 30 - making it one of those rare gems that both stand alone as a fantastic piece of work and a sign of potential greatness to come. Sadly, we'll never know!

Ticket giveaways:

Buy a release from any band playing an upcoming Empty Bottle, Schubas or Lincoln Hall show and we can add you to the guest list. Stop in or give us a call! Keep an eye out for announcements for eligible Metro, Constellation, and Bottom Lounge shows too!
