saki newsletter 9/18/15!

Hey everyone, we're pretty excited for the next two weeks. Not only does Meat Wave's Delusion Moon come out today, but we're hosting the band for an in-store next Saturday at 4pm! They'll be joined by another one of Chicago's best bands, Vamos. Come say hi and pick up the new (or older) records and tapes from both bands!

There are also plenty of other new releases to be excited about this week, including two new ones from Salad Boys and Primitive Parts on Trouble In Mind, reissues of the Small Faces and Happy Mondays, Ought, Telekinesis, and a reissue of Elyse Weinberg's Greasepaint Smile (feat. Neil Young) on Numero's budget imprint, Numerophon!

Head over to the CHIRP Radio Brunch at Parts and Labor on Saturday afternoon for good tunes, brunch booze, and a chance to win some cool prizes, including saki gift certificates and merch!

Since this is still a fairly new thing, we want to remind you all that we are currently CLOSED on Mondays. Our friends at CTD and Carrot Top Records will still be in the office, so if you need to see them on a Monday, just ring the doorbell and someone will come up to help you.

Sorry for any inconvenience this change may cause! If it really is a problem for you, just get in touch with us and we may change our hours back in the future.

Here are a few things we were yammering about on Instagram, etc. this week:

Look at this freakin' GWAR book! It's seriously amazing. It covers GWAR from their beginning up to today with photos, illustrations, comics, interviews, ephemera, and all kinds of other things covered in blood. Pick one up for Riot Fest!

Mountain Goats mastermind, John Darnielle wrote an incredible novel last year (especially considering it's his first)! It was a big seller for us in hardcover and it's now available in paperback. If you haven't read it yet, we highly recommend you do. It's a quick, easy and engrossing read.

It took FOR-EV-ER but we finally got copies of the latest Pile record in stock, plus some other recent Exploding In Sound gems and restocks!

We still have a handful of these Calvin Johnson mixtapes left! These things are made from Calvin's personal collection and every dang one of 'em is a lesson in music history from the hits to some lesser known gems. We can't recommend them enough!

Staff Picks:

Adam's Pick of the Week: The Beta Band - Three E.P.'s (individual 12" reissues)

Call me a cheater, but my pick this week is three separate EPs by The Beta Band. For the most part these individual EPs didn't become well known until they were released collectively on a single CD as The Three E.P.'s. Now they are available again as individual 12" EP reissues.

The Beta Band never got the commercial success that many of their contemporaries found, but most of those peers were hyping The Beta Band even as their own projects were at the top of the pop world. The Beta Band are quintessentially 90's and British, taking full grasp of the genre-blending radio-ready rock of their era, but they always seemed to make it seem more effortless than everyone else. Honestly, any description of the Beta Band's sound in 2015 will sound dated, but if you don't know it, give it a listen. All three E.P.s hold up better than you think they would, and each one is well worth the individual price tag!

Anna's Pick of the Week: Shannon and the Clams - Gone by the Dawn

I love pop from the 1950s and 60s. I also love gettin’ down and having a good time. Shannon and the Clams is a band that merges bubbly pop with gritty surf rock and is catchy as all hell, not to mention their aesthetic is fab. They’d probably fit right in place in the movie Cry-Baby. Anyway, on this, their fourth album, cuts like ”Telling MYself” will have you humming and  “How Long” will have you crooning.

Ticket giveaways:

Buy a release from any band playing an upcoming Empty Bottle, Schubas or Lincoln Hall show and we can add you to the guest list. Stop in or give us a call! Keep an eye out for announcements for eligible Metro, Constellation, and Bottom Lounge shows too!
