saki newsletter 10/2/15!

Oh man, thanks to Meat Wave, Vamos, and everyone who came out for the in-store last Saturday! Both of those bands are always a great time. If you haven't had the chance to listen to Meat Wave's Delusion Moon or S/T, or Vamos' Spiderbait,  you should get on that right away. They are two of the best local releases in recent memory!

Keep reading for recent arrivals, new releases, and weekly staff picks! We've also got some fun stuff to announce soon, so keep up with us here on the blog, or on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.!

Since this is still a fairly new thing, we want to remind you all that we are currently CLOSED on Mondays. Our friends at CTD and Carrot Top Records will still be in the office, so if you need to see them on a Monday, just ring the doorbell and someone will come up to help you.

Sorry for any inconvenience this change may cause! If it really is a problem for you, just get in touch with us and we may change our hours back in the future.

Here are a few things we were yammering about on Instagram, etc. this week:

We've got one more pair of tickets to give away for Mike Krol at The Empty Bottle on the 7th. Just pick up Turkey from saki and we'll hook you up!

We got a few copies of Pity Sex's long out of stock Feast of Love LP in this week. They all had slightly damaged sleeves so we're putting them out on the cheap!

After a long wait, Whistler Records finally received vinyl copies of Bill Mackay and Ryley Walker's fantastic Land of Plenty LP! We're going to play the crap out of it this fall.

Girl Band's debut full length is out now! We are beyond stoked on this one. Do yourself a solid and check it out.

Staff Picks:

Adam's Pick of the Week: I'm Just Like You - Sly's Stone Flower 1969-1970

Typically, if Light In The Attic puts something out I'm on board before I even hear it. With their collection of Sly Stone's short-lived vanity label, Stone Flower, I practically missed the boat altogether! In the past few months I've realized my mistake and I'm Just Like You hasn't left my turntable much at all.

Collecting all of Stone Flower's singles, plus some previously unreleased tracks, I'm Just Like You is a satisfying listen on the surface. It's also a behind-the-scenes peak of sorts for Sly Stone's transition from the over-the-top, mostly good time funk bandleader of the late 60's, to the more introspective and world weary studio wizard he became in the early 70's. Some of the tracks found here (and not just the demos) have an ephemeral feel. Even if they weren't the culmination of an idea, they are still a fascinating portrait of a monster artist and producer in process, as well as the only document for a few stellar acts who never did much of anything outside of their tenure with Stone Flower.

Anna's Pick of the Week: Spike and the Sweet Spots - Strange Breed

I wish I could say that I’m cool enough to have known these guys since they were scrapping together this album, playing around Chicago’s rocknroll bars. But I’m not cool. I saw their record on the new releases rack and looked it up on spotify. And what a treat! Good time fuzzy lo-fi garage rock, reminiscent of an early apples in stereo, but slightly slower and more melancholic. You’ll feel your shoulders swaying, craving to sing along in a hole in the wall someplace. Perfect music for packing away summer’s tanks tops, and rediscovering all your autumn sweaters.

Selected Track: When you're Dumb
