In-store schedule:

Those of you who have followed saki these past several years are probably already aware that we host an in-store marathon on RSD each year. Every year we panic and think that we're not going to be able to pull down a lineup that will stack up to previous years, and every year we're amazed to watch it all fall into place just in time. Some might call it hard work, we know it's just dumb luck. So, here it is, our lineup for RSD 2015...

1pm - Cheap Girls (acoustic)
2pm - Advance Base
3pm - Oshwa (Alicia solo)
4pm - Sleeping Bag
5pm - Supreme Nothing
6pm - The Sueves

For those of you who may not be aware of some of the bands on our RSD lineup, we're running a feature on two of them in our newsletter each week...

Cheap Girls
Cheap Girls are a quintessential Midwestern rock band. They keep it simple and they write damn good songs. What more could you want!? Since the band's inception in 2007 they've kept busy by touring with The Hold Steady, Against Me!, Hard Girls, Lemuria, and Andrew Jackson Jihad (any of whom could be touchstones for CG's sound), as well as releasing a string of consistently great records and singles. They're a hard band to describe adequately because, well, they keep it so simple. So here's a few tracks to check out. The last two are probably most like what you'll see here on RSD since Ian will be playing a stripped down/acoustic set with his guitarist, Adam.

Advance Base
Advance Base hails from right here in Logan Square! As the current vehicle for singer/songwriter, Owen Ashworth, the band is in some ways a continuation of the sound he established as Casiotone For The Painfully Alone throughout the early aughts, with Owen's droll, self-aware lyrics, and flat, baritone vocal delivery still at the forefront. What's changed the most is the instrumentation. Having done away with the cheap, twinkly Casio keyboards, Advance Base's songs keep much of the structure of CFTPA, but employing "electric pianos, Omnichords, [and] orchestral samples," among other things, Owen has shown a clear maturation with Advance Base.

Oshwa
Pictured above is Oshwa's lead singer, Alicia Walter. We found a picture of her by herself, not because we don't think the rest of the band is very handsome, but because Alicia will be pulling solo duty for us on RSD. With some bands that might be a bit of a letdown, but Oshwa started as a solo project for Alicia, and while their full band experience is essential, we know Alicia can put on a captivating performance on her own.

Oshwa have graced our stage a few times (though it's been a while) and we're always amazed at how their sound can twist and turn, always sounding familiar, but increasingly complex and different each time. Alicia's solo set will be yet another opportunity to experience Oshwa's music in a new way. We're guessing it's going to sound something like a mix of early tUnE-yArDs and Dirty Projectors, which is A-OK with us!

Sleeping Bag
Sleeping Bag began as a solo drum project for Dave Segedy in Bloomington, Indiana. They've since become a three-piece and developed into one of the best bands in a growing crop of 90's slacker rock revivalists. Sleeping Bag veer towards the pop side of that crop, with Segedy's knack for melody always present, even shining through his somewhat detached vocals. On their most recent release for Joyful Noise, they've found a slightly darker edge. The songs are just as infectious, but the sound is heavier. It's an exciting progression for the band. We've been trying to have these guys at the shop for a long time now. We can't wait to hear them on Record Store Day!

Supreme Nothing

Supreme Nothing are a fairly new band from Chicago, by way of Indiana. They claim members of Grown Ups, Scoundrel, and Lord Snow to name a few. We think they're going to fit in perfectly between Sleeping Bag and The Sueves, as their sound falls somewhere between 90's alt-rock revivalism and that garage rock/punk that all the kids love these days. Supreme Nothing's first release is coming soon, but this will be your chance to see them at saki before you start seeing them pop up everywhere else!

The Sueves
The Sueves are a bunch of handsome boys from Chicago. We've been fans of theirs for a while. They played one of our shows at The Burlington years back, Joe was a part of one of our comic-themed group show (you've seen his work on many Empty Bottle posters), and Joe and Andy even played our old comedy show, Creative Control as musical guests. We were hoping to have copies of their debut 7" on Hozac by RSD, but due to the pressing plant traffic jam that RSD causes every year, the label won't have any copies available. It's a bummer, but on the very, very bright side, we all get to see The Sueves play once again!

It's a big list, right!? Well, we chose a few of our favorites to help you out. Read on to see what Nick and Adam had to say about the best of the best (in our opinion) for RSD '15!

Adam's RSD picks...

Stack Waddy - Bugger Off 2 LP

Stack Waddy were a British blues-rock band at a time when there were probably too many of them. Sure, there's Clapton, and John Mayall, and Peter Green, but none of them had the balls of Stack Waddy. Bugger Off 2 is full of outtakes from the sessions that brought their most well known album, 'Bugger Off.' Of course, I could just tell you that John Peel LOVED this band, and that should be enough.

Bardo Pond - Is There A Heaven? 12"

I'll buy anything that Bardo Pond puts out. You're not me, I get it, but this is maybe the only way that you should try and be like me. This is the third installment in Bardo's 12" series for RSD. On each 12" they cover two of their favorite songs, re-imagining the likes of Funkadelic, Pharoah Sanders, Brian Eno, The Velvet Underground, and now Bryan Ferry and Albert Ayler. It's amazing and very limited and you need it.

Lows In The Mid Sixties Vol. 54: Kosmic City Part 2 LP

Psych-garage soul stompers straight out of Kansas City! These are a bunch of lesser-known no-hit wonders that Numero Group have compiled for us all in one, very cool looking compilation. There are some great originals, and a bunch of worthwhile covers in here. If nothing else, people will see this one on your shelf and just think it LOOKS cool, which it does, because Numero always does a great job.

Wonderland Philharmonic - Shogun Assassin OST LP

This is a weird one, but a must-have. If you're aware of Shogun Assassin, it's most likely because of GZA's Liquid Swords, or the Kill Bill movies, but this, the movies original soundtrack is a classic in its own right. It was produced by Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and The Raiders W. Michale Lewis of Rinder and Lewis. Much like the movie itself, the soundtrack is mash-up of Eastern themes and modern (at the time) American electronic music. It also comes with a huge movie poster!

Guided By Voices - Do The Collapse LP

You could ignore every other track on here and just play 'Teenage FBI' on repeat and it would still be worth it. I'm not saying you SHOULD do that, but you could. That song is perfect, and the rest of this record is almost as good.

Brenton Wood - Oogum Boogum LP

'Oogum Boogum' and 'Gimme Little Sign' are two of the best soul/dance tracks ever put to wax. Fans of Al Green and Syl Johnson, don't forget to pick this one up!

Nick's RSD picks...

Trojan - Rude Boy Rumble
Trojan is finally starting to sell more vinyl, with limited selections culled from their CD box sets that came out several years ago. This one was compiled just for RSD and contains some seriously choice cuts! If you've ever thought "I want to get into reggae, but I don't know where to start" then this is the comp for you! A bunch of essential artists on this one. GET IT!

Pretty Things - Pretty Things EP 7"
This reissue fucking rips! Four scorching tracks sure to inspire you to get zorched.

Kyle Kinane - I Liked His Old Stuff Better LP Former local boy done good! Sure it's just my opinion, but I'd say that Kyle is one of the top comedians you can see live today. Comedy is all about the live experience, but his past out puts have held their own. Dude went from playing in a ska band at the Fireside Bowl to his current gig as the voice of Comedy Central. Skank on that pickle, suckers! If you see this make sure to pick it up, pick it up.

Metallica - No Life Til Leather Cassette
HOLY SHIT, this is the one I've been waiting for! Sure it's a tape and sure it's demo tracks, but that doesn't stop it from being the best bay area thrash recordings of all time. I've only really been able to hear bootlegs online before and paying $400 for an original isn't very mesh, so owning a physical copy is a a must for those who long to bang their heads.

Trey Anastasio Band - Bounce / Never 7"
In all honestly, I don't care about the music on here whatsoever. I think you should buy a copy just so you and your granola eating friends can have a super limited edition frisbee to throw around at the final Dead shows when you're tailgating at Soldier Field later this year. If you can afford those tickets, then the fee here is chump change. RIP Jerry!
