New King Louie & The Missing Monuments

This gem along with new records from Puffy Areolas, the Liminanas, and Peoples Temple are due August 8th. We can't wait. What a killer round of releases from the ever-awesome HoZac records.

Track: Missing Monuments - Another Girl

Garage punk veteran King Louie Bankston and his Missing Monuments have leaked a track from their upcoming HoZac Records 7”, and this one is a heck of a jam. The rough and raunchy Tom Petty/Paul Collins-style power pop of their debut LP Painted White (Douchemaster, 2011) took awhile to sink in, but “Another Girl” is a much more direct and punk-influenced track, heavily reminiscent of classic acts like Pointed Sticks and the Undertones.

Roky Erickson at The Empty Bottle 5/20/12

Kevin McKeough pretty much nails this Chicago Tribune review of Roky Erickson Blackout Fest-closing performance at the Empty Bottle Sunday, May 20th. The only thing I would add is that in those moments when Roky slipped or in Kevin's words was most "vulnerable", his bandmates were there to break his fall. Without the least bit of hesitation or frustration they got him right back on track.

It's hard to imagine a song like "You're Gonna Miss Me" not having some kind of effect on the listener. In the context of the now 64 year-old psych pioneer's long observed "vulnerability" it seems almost impossible. I mean, Roky's story is kind of a sad one no matter how you look at it. It's difficult not to think of him as a victime in one way or another.

The show probably wasn't supposed to leave me with a case of the warm-and-fuzzies, but that's what cheering for Roky did. I'll bet I wasn't the only one who felt like they were rooting for the (two-headed) underdog.

Read the Tribune review below, then head over to Tinygrooves.blogspot.com and check out some great live footage of the performance.

Plateaus - Do It For You

Check out a new track and video from Plateaus. It will be featured on the upcoming Hozac 7" due this month.

"The latest video from San Diego quartet Plateaus contains the first high speed chase scene I’ve seen where I was simply driven to say, “Aww, how cute!” (Driven! Ha, get it?) The whole claymation style doesn’t usually make me think of batshit, explode-y action flicks, but I can definitely get behind this combo and it stars one badass little clay dude. The cheap VHS style of the video is incredibly nostalgia-inducing, if not well-coordinated with the band’s cassette-recorded pop-fuzzed rock ‘n’ roll." -Kristen Berry, Get Bent!

Personalized Record Sleeves

Chicago's very own HoZac records might be the first label to ever deliver personalized record sleeves.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "but Ed... you're like a music industry big-wig. You probably played an integral role in the production of that record. That's why they thanked you and that's why they pay you the big bucks, right?" Well, no, no, no, and no.

What the fine folks at HoZac have done here, is give their Hookup Klub subscribers an extra special little treat.  Take that "hand-numbered limited edition of 300". This is a record made just for me (kinda) and about 10,000 times better than the Phone Book.

I'm (really) somebody now!
Round 3 of the Klub will include singles from UV Race, Nones, Dan Melchior, Homostupids, Slug Guts, Black Lips/Mark Sultan, and more! For more information visit  http://hozacrecords.com/ and join their mailing list.
