USED: Mint Boddie 5LP box from Numero!

Check out this little gem! We've got a mint used copy of Numero's Boddie Recording Co. 5LP box set in the shop!

From 1958-1993, Thomas & Louise Boddie's industrious Boddie Recording Co. issued nearly 300 albums & 45s, recorded 10,000 hours of tape, & remained in operation longer than any other studio, pressing plant, or label in the history of Cleveland, Ohio. These tracks represent the best of Boddie's in-house labels, which released an unspoiled treasure trove of kitchen-sink eccentric soul, fuzzbox funk, shoestring doo-wop, & haunting spirituals.

The box set also includes a book and some replica ephemera from Boddie! We don't expect this one to last too long.

This week we're going to continue offering the sale on Sleep's epic Dopesmoker, and we're adding the two new killer Trouble In Mind releases, MMOSS' Only Children and Woollen Kits' Four Girls!

MMOSS - Only Children CD or LP

From the damp & misty woods of New Hampshire emerges the 2nd full length from psych jam warriors, MMOSS. Following 2011's release on Burger Records, the songs here are a decidedly heavier trip, boasting feats of krautrock, cascading vocal harmonies, & expanded blasts of psychedelic mayhem. MMOSS is the sound of hippies that took the brown acid & liked it. 150 gram randomly mixed colored vinyl comes with download code!

Woollen Kits - Four Girls CD or LP

Australia is in a full-on rock & roll renaissance right now & charging to the front of the pack are Melbourne's Woollen Kits. They have the swagger & jangle of classic Flying Nun Records releases & the simplicity & directness of Beat Happening with a dash of late 80s underground rock. Plus the track "Cheryl" - an easy standout - offers listeners the best advice EVER: "When you look good, you know you feel good, & when you look good, you get shit done." True dat! 150 gram randomly mixed colored vinyl comes with download code.

Sleep - Dopesmoker 2LP

The 63 minute long ode to weed on 180gm purple 2LP. Contains bonus track not available on CD version. "Drop out of life with bong in hand, follow the smoke to the riff-filled land!"

Helllooooo, friends! Hope you all had a thankfulicious holiday and were able to wake up from your post-dinner hibernation without incident. We'd also like to thank you guys for coming out this weekend to pick up the Record Store Day Black Friday releases and not physically assaulting each other. We've said it before and we'll say it again, WE ARE NOT A WALMART. Thank you guys for keeping it stab and mace-free! We've got a very small handful of RSD BF titles left, but they are now available to mail order customers as well, so if you need anything get over here soon!

We're going to get back in the swing of things this Friday with another installment of our favorite thing ever: Creative Control with Joe McAdam! If you haven't made out to one of these yet (we do them on the last Friday of every month) you are missing out. It's the most fun you'll ever have at a record store. This time our friends from Powell Brew House are coming out to offer samples of their homebrewed goodness too! On Saturday we've got another Epitonic saki Session with an awesome band from Bloomington called Sleeping Bag! They're one of our favorite new bands from the past few years. If you haven't heard them before be sure to come check them out for FREE at saki this weekend!

Plenty of other good stuff coming up in the next few weeks as well! Check the listings below and stay tuned for more info on all that on the blog and in next week's newsletter!

Also, don't forget to check the blog every week to see which new releases we're offering up for 20% OFF! This week you can grab: Sleep's epic Dopesmoker, and we're adding two new killer Trouble In Mind releases, MMOSS' Only Children and Woollen Kits' Four Girls!

Pitchfork interviews Ty Segall & shows the love

I'll get right to the point: Ty Segall is a busy, busy man. He's released THREE albums this year (Drag City's Hair LP/CD/CAS and Twins LP/CD/CAS, not to mention the 7"ers for The Hill and Spiders, as well as Slaughterhouse 2x10"/CD on In The Red) and is seemingly constantly on tour.

The Mars Attacks-sized brains at Pitchfork caught up with him in a fancy feature ~ see what our modern day hero has to say...even Rockin' Rian Murphy makes an appearance:

"'The thing about rock'n'roll these days is that there’s a lot of fucking demystified greatness,' he explains while munching down a handful of fries slathered in mayo at a Toronto takeout counter. 'You gotta have someone to believe in that will not tell you anything—somebody that will not give you a single piece of information, but who looks rad and makes rad music. I mean, I would do anything to be a 12-year-old kid when Kiss’ Alive came out.'"

"'Rock'n'roll doesn’t tell you what to think and do, it makes you feel a certain way, so you do those things on your own,' says Segall. And he knows the hit-you-in-the-face factor is key to making you do those things. Twins, which Segall performed and recorded almost entirely on his own, definitely meets the standard for skronky catharsis."

Live at Lincoln Hall: La Sera opened for Father John Misty and Jeffertitti's Nile

After releasing two albums on Sub Pop's sister label Hardly Art, Goodman developed a confidence that has added luster to her live presence. Not only can she actually play her instruments-- namely the bass, but also the guitar and, thumbing illustrious riffs-- Goodman can captivate an audience with a shake and swing of her hips.

The band played a few tracks from their debut self-titled release but mostly stuck to hits from their latest album, Sees The Light, ending with the featured track called “Love That’s Gone.” And like that “Kickball Katy” vanished off stage leaving a fleet of beating hearts fluttering with wonder.

Jeffertitti's Nile, aka Jeffertitti's Moon, aka Father John Misty's bassist opened the show.

Father John Misty played the day before at saki with The Orwell’s for their Epitonic saki session.

Vinnie the Intern #24: Captain Murphy's Du∆lity

Captain Murphy's long-awaited mixtape, Duality, is finally here as of noon last Thursday. An album that brings as many questions as it does answers, it is a unique experience that fans of Madvillain  Earl Sweatshirt, or Flying Lotus should enjoy.

Not only an incredibly charismatic and realized debut (especially since Captain Murphy has only been in the public eye for less than 6 months), the corresponding video, created by Xavier Magot, is so well done it could make a grind-house feature blush. Even though it has dropped, there are still many questions (other than the identity Captain Murphy), such as the names of the tracks (thus making this review harder than it should have been). On Sunday, on his Twitter, a link to a seamless Mp3 was available for download. Reportedly, the 28th of November will be the date we are given the deluxe edition of Duality and feature "more songs and the instrumentals."

Naomi Punk - Voodoo Trust from The Feeling!

Highly recommended! Check out the video for 'Voodoo Trust' off of Naomi Punk's stellar 2012 LP, The Feeling! Originally released in a run of 300 earlier this year, the album is being reissued by Captured Tracks this week on CD, with the LP delayed until 12/4.

This one will be popping up on a lot of best of lists this year. If you've been into anything Ty Segall has done the past few years, you won't want to sleep on Naomi Punk!

saki newsletter 11/13/12!

Hello again, folks! It's that time of the week again... time for the saki newsletter! We'd like to thank Seluah, Circuit Des Yeux & Sea Hero for playing at The Burlington this weekend. We had a great time!

This Friday we're hosting a fundraiser at saki Hurricane Sandy victims. Joe McAdam, who produces and hosts are monthly comedy/variety show, Creative Control, is also producing this show. Some of his family members who live in the NY/NJ area have been completely displaced by flooding. Joe asked for our help to raise some money to get them back on there feet and we couldn't say no. We'll have a bunch of great Chicago comics and music from Gabe Liebowitz of Dastardly, as well as a whole bunch of auction/raffle prizes to give away. Please come and enjoy the show and donate some money to a very worthy cause! If you can't makie it, but you would still like to donate, you can do so by going to Joe McAdam's site an
d clicking on the PayPal link!

Our next event after the fundraiser is, not so oddly enough, Creative Control with Joe McAdam on the 30th! This month we've got a bunch of other Chicago comics, and one former Chicagoan visiting from LA, along with music from Oshwa! If you haven't been to Creative Control yet, you're missing out! It's one of the best comedy showcases in Chicago. This month we also have our friends from Powell Brew House coming out to pour some of their delicious homebrewed beer for you! If you don't like homebrew you can still BYOB, but if you don't like homebrew, what are you doing in my country? Get out!

There's a bunch of other good stuff coming up in December. We'll give you more on that later, but for now check out the listings below!

Don't forget that we are now offering select new releases for 20% off each week at saki! This week, you can snag Sonic Youth, Philip Glass & Killer Mike for 20% off!

Vinnie the Intern #23: Titus Andronicus - Local Business

This review may be a little behind, but today I will be focusing on the new Titus Andronicus album, Local Business. Released last month, the album treads usually territory of American anthems, New Jersey, and references to Shakespearean tragedy.

On a side note, I will be reviewing Captain Murphy's highly anticipated album Duality next week! It is scheduled for release this Thursday.
Titus Andronicus - Local Business (XL Recordings)
Local Business, the follow up to their expansive sophomore album The Monitor, can be seen as their most polished yet but that does not take away from the final product. It is undeniably an album by Titus Andronicus. This time around Patrick Stickles vocals are not as guttural, arrangements are simplistic, and his lyrics seem to be some of his most personal yet, especially the eight minute epic "My Eating Disorder," presumptuously dealing with his eating disorder. In the weeks upcoming to the album, Titus Andronicus played several "Local Business" sessions around Brooklyn, I assume as an ode to the the local businesses that fuel our economy and the hard working, individuals that create a back bone of our society.

Philip Glass - Rework: Philip Glass Remixed LP

2xLP WHITE WITH SILVER SPLATTER VINYL. The idea for "Rework" came together during a conversation between Philip & his friend & new collaborator BECK. The pair recruited producer Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Bjork, Lou Reed) to help assemble a collection of remixes of Glass' works by a list of critically acclaimed artists including BECK, TYONDAI BRAXTON, AMON TOBIN, CORNELIUS, DAN DEACON, JOHANN JOHANNSSON, NOSAJ THING, MEMORY TAPES, PANTHA DU PRINCE, MY GREAT GHOST & PETER BRODERICK.

Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music LP

"Mike hooks up with 2012 MVP frontrunner El-P... to create what's described on the title track as "what my people need and the opposite of bullshit." It's the 2012 equivalent to Ice Cube and the Bomb Squad's similarly inspired bicoastal union on AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted.Limiting himself to one producer, legends-only guest spots, and a real sense that he'd better make this one count, Killer Mike rises to the occasion." - P4K

Jessica Bailiff / Pitchfork 7.5 for "At The Down Turned Jagged Rim of The Sky"

Jessica Bailiff is no stranger to us here at CTD.  We've been hawking her wares for some time now.  Imagine the pleasantries that filled the office here this morning when we noticed that Pitchfork have issued her newest Kranky LP/CD, At The Down-Turned Jagged Rim of The Sky, a 7.5 rating.

"At the Down-Turned Jagged Rim of the Sky, her first full-length since 2006, is on the one hand just another Jessica Bailiff album, suffused with her cool, half-chanted singing and plenty of sonic murk. But it's also quite unlike anything she's done before. It's focused, without the lengthy experiments, and the flow of the album is coherent. Odd Nosdam's mixing adds a subtle punch, and her songs sometimes bring to mind New Zealand experimentalist Graeme Jefferies of the Cakekitchen, offering a specific vision of hooks, delivery, and fuzz."

"There's a clear sense of arrangement and precision throughout. Often there's no overt variation or change in a song, but when subtle changes do emerge after careful listening, you get a sense of how her understated touch creates a strong impact. Bringing scope and space to a more intimate level, the miniature epic 'This is Real' demonstrates the virtues of the slow build and Bailiff's careful placement: repeated keyboard parts are matched by guitars, then voices take the place of the guitars as new guitars are added into the background. It feels like sweeping exultance, a sigh, and the title's reach for something grounded."

WFMU Hell and High Water Fundraiser

New Jersey's WFMU, the longest running freeform radio station in the country, was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy last week, causing electrical, water, and financial damages to their studios and transmitter sites. The station is endlessly entertaining and exciting, broadcasting some of the best radio shows currently on the air (both musical and non-musical) and is very deserving of your support.

Obviously there are plenty of causes that will make great use of any and all financial contributions that come their way, but if you have some extra cash, please consider sending some of it WFMU's way.

Foxygen & Angel Olsen play saki 12/9

saki is excited to present a free, all-ages in-store with Foxygen and Angel Olsen on Sunday, December 9th at 3pm. RSVP on Facebook.

Foxygen’s debut EP Take the Kids Off Broadway (Jagjaguwar) received a 7.9 on Pitchfork. Foxygen is the bi-coastal songwriting duo of Sam France (vocals, Olympia, Wash.) and Jonathan Rado (guitar/keyboards, NYC). They are the raw, de-Wes Andersonization of The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Velvets, Bowie, etc. that a whole mess of young people desperately need. They create a sometimes-impressionistic, sometimes-hyper-real portrait of sounds from specific places and times. Yet, it never comes across as anything but absolutely modern music. They bring the manic, freewheeling qualities of an artist like Ariel Pink to those aforementioned influences to make for one of the most refreshing listens of the year. They are the real deal and total savants.

Angel Olsen’s latest album Half Way Home (Bathetic) received an 8.0 on Pitchfork. A continuation of her elegance brought forth on Strange Cacti, a collection of both new & old music, honed & matured, thoughts revisited. We're hearing this same beautiful girl with that same beautiful voice, this time brought up to a new level, in no doubt a growth & reach brought on by several roadtrips with the one & only BONNIE "PRINCE" BILLY & crew.

The shows will be recorded as Epitonic saki Sessions and become available for download at Epitonic.com.

The saki in-store is in anticipation of Foxygen’s show at Metro on the night of Sunday, December 9th with Of Montreal and Wild Belle.

BV Chicago is also pretty pumped about this.

MTV Hive premieres "gloom-pop track" Slow So Long, the first track available off upcoming Speck Mountain album Badwater (Carrot Top Records | January 22, 2013). The new track "contains gauzy atmospherics, moody guitars, and tender vocals." Take a listen!

Badwater has also caught the ears of folks in the UK. Middle Boop Mag. They call the upcoming album, "a progression of their psychedelic sound, bonding together via scraps of foggy, lucid dreams created by 'musical soulmates' finding one another."
