Live at Lincoln Hall: La Sera opened for Father John Misty and Jeffertitti's Nile

La Sera, the solo project of Vivian Girls bassist “Kickball Katy” Goodman, opened for Father John Misty (aka J. Tillman) at Lincoln Hall on the eve of Halloween.

After releasing two albums on Sub Pop's sister label Hardly Art, Goodman developed a confidence that has added luster to her live presence. Not only can she actually play her instruments-- namely the bass, but also the guitar and, thumbing illustrious riffs-- Goodman can captivate an audience with a shake and swing of her hips. 

The band played a few tracks from their debut self-titled release but mostly stuck to hits from their latest album, Sees The Light, ending with the featured track called “Love That’s Gone.” And like that “Kickball Katy” vanished off stage leaving a fleet of beating hearts fluttering with wonder.

Jeffertitti's Nile, aka Jeffertitti's Moon, aka Father John Misty's bassist opened the show.

Foxygen & Angel Olsen play saki 12/9

saki is excited to present a free, all-ages in-store with Foxygen and Angel Olsen on Sunday, December 9th at 3pm. RSVP on Facebook.

Foxygen’s debut EP Take the Kids Off Broadway (Jagjaguwar) received a 7.9 on Pitchfork. Foxygen is the bi-coastal songwriting duo of Sam France (vocals, Olympia, Wash.) and Jonathan Rado (guitar/keyboards, NYC). They are the raw, de-Wes Andersonization of The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Velvets, Bowie, etc. that a whole mess of young people desperately need. They create a sometimes-impressionistic, sometimes-hyper-real portrait of sounds from specific places and times. Yet, it never comes across as anything but absolutely modern music. They bring the manic, freewheeling qualities of an artist like Ariel Pink to those aforementioned influences to make for one of the most refreshing listens of the year. They are the real deal and total savants.

Angel Olsen’s latest album Half Way Home (Bathetic) received an 8.0 on Pitchfork. A continuation of her elegance brought forth on Strange Cacti, a collection of both new & old music, honed & matured, thoughts revisited. We're hearing this same beautiful girl with that same beautiful voice, this time brought up to a new level, in no doubt a growth & reach brought on by several roadtrips with the one & only BONNIE "PRINCE" BILLY & crew. 

The shows will be recorded as Epitonic saki Sessions and become available for download at Epitonic.com.

The saki in-store is in anticipation of Foxygen’s show at Metro on the night of Sunday, December 9th with Of Montreal and Wild Belle.

Father John Misty (aka J. Tillman, formerly of Fleet Foxes) joined us with Chicago friends (and Creative Control alums) The Orwells on Monday, October 29 at saki for an Epitonic saki Session presented by the folks at Aquarium Drunkard!

Q & A with Helado Negro

Tomorrow... Monday, September 24, 2012 at 5 pm Helado Negro (with Tony Trimm and Serengeti) will be performing an Epitonic saki Session open to the public. (RSVP here.)We caught up with Helado Negro and picked his brain a bit. 

Roberto Carlos Lange earned his nickname, Negro (a name used as a term of endearment), growing up  in South Florida. He went off to college in Savannah, Georgia and discovered visual and auditory art. He and David Ellis were working on some  kinetic sound sculptures.

These include typewriters that self-type the lyrics to Grand Master Flash's "The Message" (in rhythm to the song, none-the-less), musical owls drawn out of liquor bottles, owl costumes made out of straws, flying musical birds, motion paintings, and trash cans (full of trash) that are actually living drum machines.' -Asthmatic Kitty.  

He has worked on several projects, including Epstein, School of Seven Bells, Prefuse 73, Ombre (project with Julianna Barwick) and has released several albums including Canta Lechuza, Awe Owe and Pasajero on Asthmatic Kitty.  He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

  Favorite/least favorite cheese?

I say the stinkier the better... As a kid I started with American Cheeses, nowadays I go to the farmers market/cheese factory for some stinky blue. 

Most Memorable gig? 

While touring in Japan we had several strange experiences. we were traveling through smaller towns when we stopped by this strange place filled with fast food joints and strip malls... and a truck lot is where we ended up playing; weird to be at some abandoned spot with a total of five people and giant speakers surrounding the room, I was thinking “where the hell are we?” Another strange (awesome) venue we played was on a mountain top, while in the pouring rain, ape shit crazy, so random to just end up on a hippie commune in Japan. They had some super earthy hippie products too...  for instance reusable lady pads, I put them on my eyes before I go to sleep. And we stopped at a beer joint and ate whale and octopus jerky... I had to try it, the whale jerky. 

Xiu Xiu FREE 12:30pm.

Did you miss Xiu Xiu @ Schubas last night? Bummer! But not really. Because come over to saki around 12:30pm to see a FREE in-store performance! Grab a slice and some cold beverages and come hang out with us today. Not the worst way to start a new week. Well, come to think of it, you might feel like the worst after a Xiu Xiu set. But in a good way?
