Spin Spotlights The Numero Group

Take a trip down South with our friends from the Numero Group.

The Numero Group has become the world's greatest reissue label by tirelessly chasing dead-ends, following every detour, and ringing doorbells at their own risk. DAVID PEISNER trails the label's founders through Louisiana as they sniff mold, rifle through trash, and maybe expose a few lost geniuses.
This is what it's come to. When a man isn't listed in the phone book, when he doesn't respond to emails or letters, when nobody seems to know how to find him, sometimes you just have to roll up to his last known address and holler at him. Literally.
"Mr. Gibson! Mr. Gibson!"
It's 11 o'clock on a Thursday morning and Ken Shipley is standing on the sidewalk outside a tidy, one-story brick house in the Carrollton section of New Orleans. Hands cupped around the sides of his mouth, he's trying to summon Joe Gibson from what may or may not be his home. Shipley surely would've preferred knocking on the door or ringing the bell, but the small home is separated from the street by not one, but two, locking wrought-iron gates.
"Mr. Gibson! Anyone home?"
In the early 1970s, Gibson wrote and produced two 45s by a group called the Soul Emotions, which featured his three young daughters. Not many copies of either record were pressed, not many were sold, and by the time Gibson's eldest daughter was a junior in high school, the Soul Emotions had quit performing. The records quickly went out of print and just about disappeared from the Earth entirely.
But one made it into the hands of Rob Sevier, a partner of Shipley's at the Chicago-based reissue label, the Numero Group. Sevier thought one song — a charming pop-soul nugget called "It's Time for Love" — would fit perfectly on a compilation calledThe ABCs of Kid Soul, which documented the post-Jackson 5 explosion of such groups. So he tried to find Gibson. That was more than five years ago. The ABCscame out in 2007, but now Numero has decided to do a second album, The 123s of Kid Soul. Which is what has brought them here to the doorstep of this mini-Fort Knox in Carrollton.

Fug Comics :: Dysgraphia at saki

Dysgraphia: An exhibition by Jordan MartinsDysgraphia: An exhibition by Jordan MartinsDysgraphia: An exhibition by Jordan MartinsDysgraphia: An exhibition by Jordan Martins

Fug Comics exhibition is only up until Saturday! Not much longer to come and snag these comic-oriented prints from FugScreens!

Though it is always a bummer when stuff comes off the wall, we are so excited to put up Jordan Martins's show Dysgraphia. Above is a sneak peek of the show.

Dysgraphia: An exhibition by Jordan Martins
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 6, 6-9pm. Free.
DJ set from: Nick Butcher (Sonnenzimmer, Home Tapes)
Beverages from Cellar Rat | Food provided by saki

Dysgraphia is a project based on Jordan Martins’s interest in the Chicago-specific tradition of hand-painted, block-letter grocery signs which have come to be associated with Hispanic markets. By exaggerating the expressive colors and gestural rhythms of the original signs, Martins aims to build patters that simultaneously attract (fluorescent colors, bold shapes) and conceal (by undermining legibility). In this sense they are related both to natural camouflage and bright plumage used by animals to attract mates, or broader notions of visual stimuli to affect or sculpt behavior. This project began as a series of storefront installations.

Vinnie the Intern #16: Some Tracks Worth Checking Out

This week I will be highlighting several new (or new to me) songs from artists such as Flying Lotus to Titus Andronicus. Enjoy.

XXYYXX's single "About You" contains a hazy, Weeknd-esque beat and a back-masked lyric of "here forever inside." The hypnotic beat grows into a skittering snare and synth saturated blast of energy. It is worth noting that rappers Kami de Chukwu and Brian Fresco used the track for their song "Red Rover."

Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes (10-02/Warp)
The new Flying Lotus album, Until the Quiet Comes, is available to stream now on NPR. It does not disappoint. The immediate standout for me was the gorgeous two suite mix of "me Yesterday//Corded." A bass heavy, jazzy, ascending beat that brings a feeling of euphoria when it hits its climax.

The anonymous Captain Murphy's released his newest track off his upcoming album, Duality, last week."The Killing Joke" features a backing track of something that can be roughly translated to 'bring Lucifer to me, on a tray" and lyrics such as "speculate my identity, good luck, you'll never find me." The track has many references to Batman and the Joker. The Killing Joke is also a title of the titular graphic novel from 1988.

In addition to an Epitonic saki Session with Helado Negro & Serengeti with Tony Trimm at 5pm today, we now have another session tomorrow with Here We Go Magic at 3pm (not 1:30 pm as previously announced)!

Two sessions on two consecutive weekdays is bonkers enough, but when it's with the caliber of bands we've got here, well, bonkers just isn't a strong enough word... it's whacked. It's just whacked.

We hope you can make it to both sessions & don't forget to look out for them on Epitonic in a few weeks!

As always, these in-store sessions are FREE & ALL AGES!

Q & A with Helado Negro

Tomorrow... Monday, September 24, 2012 at 5 pm Helado Negro (with Tony Trimm and Serengeti) will be performing an Epitonic saki Session open to the public. (RSVP here.)We caught up with Helado Negro and picked his brain a bit.

Roberto Carlos Lange earned his nickname, Negro (a name used as a term of endearment), growing up  in South Florida. He went off to college in Savannah, Georgia and discovered visual and auditory art. He and David Ellis were working on some  kinetic sound sculptures.

'
These include typewriters that self-type the lyrics to Grand Master Flash's "The Message" (in rhythm to the song, none-the-less), musical owls drawn out of liquor bottles, owl costumes made out of straws, flying musical birds, motion paintings, and trash cans (full of trash) that are actually living drum machines.' -Asthmatic Kitty.
He has worked on several projects, including Epstein, School of Seven Bells, Prefuse 73, Ombre (project with Julianna Barwick) and has released several albums including Canta Lechuza, Awe Owe and Pasajero on Asthmatic Kitty.  He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.
  Favorite/least favorite cheese?
I say the stinkier the better... As a kid I started with American Cheeses, nowadays I go to the farmers market/cheese factory for some stinky blue.
Most Memorable gig?
While touring in Japan we had several strange experiences. we were traveling through smaller towns when we stopped by this strange place filled with fast food joints and strip malls... and a truck lot is where we ended up playing; weird to be at some abandoned spot with a total of five people and giant speakers surrounding the room, I was thinking “where the hell are we?” Another strange (awesome) venue we played was on a mountain top, while in the pouring rain, ape shit crazy, so random to just end up on a hippie commune in Japan. They had some super earthy hippie products too...  for instance reusable lady pads, I put them on my eyes before I go to sleep. And we stopped at a beer joint and ate whale and octopus jerky... I had to try it, the whale jerky.

Just confirmed: EsS with Here We Go Magic!

Holy cow, we've been working hard to try and pin this one down, but we can now safely say that we've got Luke Temple & Here We Go Magic coming through THIS TUESDAY for an Epitonic saki Session!

The band is playing an AMAZING bill at SubT on Tuesday night with two of our favorite locals, Golden Birthday, and (EsS alumni) Pillars & Tongues. It goes without saying that you shouldn't miss that show, but if you want to catch the band for FREE in a more intimate live setting, come say hi at saki!

We'll update you with the show time as soon as that's worked out!

***Also, don't forget we've got a fully loaded Monday session with Helado Negro & Serengeti with Tony Trimm! If the start of this week is any indication, it's going to be the Best Week Ever.***

Friday, September 21

This weekend @ saki!

Well, this is a little late... if you're not here right now, you've already missed most of Senorita Weiner's Humor Experiment & Ice Cream Social Club. That's a shame. You should have been here! Fortunately for you, Senorita Weiner is a traveling show & if you're so inclined you can catch them at their next show. We recommend that you do!

Tomorrow, we're welcoming back the Terra 5 collective & Cochise Soulstar for an in-store! We had this same lineup a few months back, but we decided that not enough people came out to see it, so we're giving you another chance. Don't take it for granted! These are two of Chicago's best hip hop acts. Come see them for free!

We're going to cheat - this isn't on the weekend, but next Monday we have an Epitonic saki Session with Helado Negro & Serengeti with Tony Trimm! That's a CRAZY lineup! We're kind of shocked that it's even happening, folks. Don't miss the show & make sure you check out the Epitonic saki Sessions page in a few weeks to download the sessions. In the meantime, grab the thirty-some other sessions that are available now for FREE download!

We'll see you this weekend!

Wee Scary Beasties- Creepy Lullabies

Have a kid you wanna subtly morph into a knowledgable little son of a gun with good music taste and a knack for vinyl? Even if the answer is no...you hopefully love halloween, love classics like the Mekons + Devil in a Woodpile + Kelly Hogan hey? If you don't know and love these musicians, what kinda Chicagoan are you????

The point is, whip out your Fisher Price turntable, put your batman jammies on, and dance to the Wee Scary Beasties double 7" Creepy Lullabies (or go with the digital download if ya want) out on Carrot Top Records subsidiary WeeBeatz Records! Made up of Jon Langford + Sally Timms of the Mekons, Kelly Hogan (Neko Case, Pine Valley Cosmonauts) and Devil in a Woodpile, these songs are brilliant for any age and put you in the halloween spooker spirit with some "mighty jug band talents of front porch settin' old-timey blues ...Shangri-Las finger-popping flavor, [and] fresh seat-of-the-pants harmonies." The Wee Hairy Beasties credit kids (and their parents) for having a brain and knowing how to use it!

Buy music from the Wee Hairy Beasties HERE or come in and get it at saki!

Senorita Weiner's Top Secret Humor Experiment and Ice Cream Social Club!

Just over a year ago, Adam and I stumbled out of AV Fest shortly after Archers of Loaf's headlining set, and headed south on Ashland towards Cobra Lounge for the debut of a new standup showcase produced by two local comedy giants, Junior Stopka and Mike Lebovitz. Being a sucker for gimmicks, I was immediately won over by the concept behind Señorita Weiner: when the comedy show ends, the entire audience gets free ice cream sundaes.

Since that first date at Cobra Lounge, Señorita Weiner's Top Secret Humor Experiment and Ice Cream Social Club has traveled to a few more of saki's favorite places in Chicago, like the Empty Bottle and Bucket O'Blood. We were lucky enough to be approached by Junior a few months ago about hosting the Señorita here at saki. Being fans of both comedy AND ice cream, we were happy to oblige!

For those who might not be familiar with the two producers, Junior recently finished a tour of the Southeast with Doug Stanhope (and also did probably my favorite set of the 5 Creative Control shows at saki), and Mike's a producer at one of the city's best-run local comedy showcases, Comedians You Should Know. In a preview of a past SW event, Junior and Mike were christened by the Chicago Reader as "two of the scene's most unabashedly bizzarre performers."

The show is this Friday, September 21st at 8pm. In addition to sets from Stopka and Lebovitz, local humorists Liza Treyger (whose Creative Control appearance a few months back absolutely wrecked me) and Charlie Bury, who you may know from being very funny at The Lincoln Lodge and as a part of the staff on The Late Live Show.

You might have noticed that the last word in the show's long-form title is "Club." You might be asking yourself "What is this club and how do I join it?" or "What are the stipulations of joining said club?" or "Are there any barriers to entry?" Here are the answers: it's mostly just a mailing list but there are other hidden perks, too!; go to senoritaweiner.com and enter your name and email address; there are none, I guess; no, there aren't.

Once again:
featuring standup comedy from
Mike Lebovitz
Liza Treyger
Charlie Bury
plus free a ice cream sundae party afterwards!

saki newsletter 9/18!

Thanks to everyone for coming out to see Handsome Family & Daniel Knox on Thursday and/or the Fug Comics opening on Saturday. We had a great time at both & we appreciate your support! You can check out both sets from Thursday when they're posted on Epitonic (hopefully in the near future). The Fug Comics show will be up until the 30th so you've only got about another two weeks to come check it out and pick up a piece if you're so inclined. We know we'll be taking a few home at the end of the month... I mean seriously, how could you NOT want to  buy this:

We've got another crazy weekend coming up for you, starting with Senorita Weiner's Top Secret Humor Experiment & Ice Cream Social Club on Friday. It's free, it's great stand up comedy & there's ice cream (though the ice cream might cost you an e-mail address...). Saturday we're welcoming back the Terra 5 hip hop collective with Cochise Soulstar. We hosted this same lineup a few months back, but we didn't feel like enough people came so we're giving you all another chance! This is seriously good local hip hop. Cochise has a tape & 7" coming out with our friends at Notes & Bolts, and Terra 5 is just a bunch of hungry young kids trying to make a name for themselves without being all Chief Keef-y. We need less Chief Keef's and more Terra 5!

Next Monday, we've got Helado Negro with Serengeti & Tony Trimm for an Epitonic saki Session! This one just came together a few days ago, so we really need your help spreading the word! It's going to be amazing - guaranteed. If it's not amazing you can punch me (Adam) in the arm as hard as  you want. That's how confident I am in this session.

There's a bunch of other good stuff coming up including possible sessions with Woods, Here We Go Magic, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Motion City Soundtrack & more, but none of those are fully confirmed yet, so keep checking those inboxes, kids! We aim to please.

Vinnie the Intern #15: WHY?'s Mumps, Ect. and The xx's Coexist

I am back with a couple album review/recommendations! This week I will be reviewing two highly anticipated albums. The first, WHY?'s Mumps, Ect. will be out next month, but has already leaked. The second, The xx's Coexist had big shoes to fit, but filled them nicely.

WHY? - Mumps, Ect (Out 10/09/2012 on Anticon)

With some of the sweetest sounding arrangements this year containing a mass of juxtaposing lyrical content, WHY? returns with their fifth full length album Mumps, Ect. This summer WHY? released their great Sod in the Seed EP. Watch the video for the title track off that EP below.

Whole lotta cheap blues & jazz titles!

Just received a big ol' stack of blues, jazz & folk classics! Most are priced around $10! Round up some laundry money and get over here. That shirt still smells clean, don't worry.

Sorry, Morrissey - I enjoy it when my friends become successful.

My boyfriend and I watch Saturday Night Live every Sunday morning/afternoon (thanks to Hulu) almost like clockwork. Some weeks I wonder why we do this, maybe because it's something we've always done, maybe cause we like to make sure we catch that one sketch of the whole season that blows our minds w/ hilarity and keeps us hooked in again. (It's an election season, so hopefully there will be more than one this year).

Now I have one more reason to watch Saturday Night Live. My hometown friend, Cecily Strong, is a new cast member. Even back in Jr. High, I knew this girl was going to be famous someday, and I am ecstatic that it's become a reality. (well, relatively.) As her first bit on the show, she naturally and confidently plays a young Latina explaining the importance of the Latino vote in this election:

Six Organs of Admittance / Sun Araw / Pitchfork take-over

TWO (count 'em) TWO reviews from the big brains at Pitchfork - both for recent Drag City releases - for Six Organs of Admittance's barnburner with erstwhile band mates in Comets on Fire, Ascent on LP/CD & Sun Araw's hazy exploration The Inner Treaty, also on LP/CD...read on, dear reader ~

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE / Ascent / Pitchfork 7.5

The Six Organs of Admittance concept has always been open-ended enough to include pretty much whatever and whomever Chasny wants it to at any given time, but "Ascent" is clearly the work of a full-fledged band...it is an invigorating detour and one of the most naturally fun records in Chasny's discography.

SUN ARAW / The Inner Treaty / Pitchfork 7.0

Epitonic saki Session with Helado Negro,Serengeti & Tony Trimm!

Just found out that we'll be hosting Helado Negro & Serengeti for an Epitonic saki Session next Monday at 5pm!

Helado Negro is one of the many names that Roberto Carlos Lange has performed under. You may also know him as ROM, Epstein, Boom & Birds, or from his recent (and highly recommended) collaboration with Julianna Barwick, Ombre, as well as his contributions to Prefuse 73 and Savath & Savalas.

That's enough right there, I should just stop, but no, we've got Serengeti on the bill too! Serengeti has been single-handedly reinventing hip hop for several years now, collaborating with Son Lux & Sufjan Stevens (as S/S/S), Odd Nosdam, Polyphonic, Owen Ashworth (of Advance Base & Casiotone For The Painfully Alone), Yoni Wolf (of Why?), and even releasing an EP in character as Kenny Dennis, a stereotypical Chicago sports fan. So yeah, you'll want to check this one out!

Hey there, not much to report from camp saki in the past week, but lots of good stuff coming up! We're so excited to have the Handsome Family & Daniel Knox playing for us this Thursday! Both are playing Epitonic saki Sessions, so you can come check it out live at the shop for free, and then download it from Epitonic after it's all mixed & mastered. Cellar Rat & Finch's Beer Co. are providing the drinks for that one, and we've got the snacks covered. Come on out, for free food, drinks & to check out some fantastic screen prints from Fugscreens.

Next weekend we have Senorita Weiner's Top Secret Humor Experiment & Ice Cream Social Club featuring comedy from Junior Stopka, Mike Lebovitz, & more on Friday, and then another in-store from Terra 5 & Cochise Soulstar on Saturday. Vinnie the Intern #14: Some Great Videos

Here are ten videos that I keep on coming back to. They are a mix of live, official, and unofficial videos. Down below you can watch Ariel Pink jump into his crowd for a make out session, watch Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav eat a pear while giving a riotous performance, and much more. Hope you enjoy!

Side note: Death Grips fans can check out an unreleased cut from The Money Store on [adult swim]'s Singles Program. The song called "@deathgripz," titled after the groups Twitter page. "@deathgripz" is a spastic cut featuring all of MC Ride's vocal abilities from mellow to abrasive, giving it a jumpy quality that fits well with the instrumental. Their second album titled NO LOVE DEEP WEB is expected for an October release.

Modest Mouse - "Dramamine" (Unofficial Video)

The Streets - Computer & Blues Interactive Film

Les Savy Fav - "Lips 'N Stuff" (Acoustic, Mahogany Sessions)

Monster Machismo - "Me Blindfolded Vs. Mike Tyson"

Los Campesinos! - "You! Me! Dancing!"

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - "Beverly Kills" (Live)

Hank - Peas (WEFT 90.1 FM Studio Performance)

Dirty Projectors - "Swing Lo Magellan" (Unofficial Video)

Cap'n Jazz - "Basil's Kite" (Light & Noise)

saki newsletter 9/4/12!

Once again, here is our weekly newsletter in all its glory. You don't even have to sign up for our mailing list... but you should. We offer other special deals for mailing list subscribers!

Oh man, do we love Creative Control... it's by far our favorite of all the events we've hosted at saki. Joe McAdam is such a great host & producer. If you didn't make it this month, it's on the last Friday of every month. Thanks to all the comics & to Rock Falls for performing! We also hosted the 1st ever US performance for a Canadian band called Marble Lion on Saturday. They were so great, so humble, so nice, so... Canadian. We had a little issue with the Xiu Xiu in-store that was supposed to happen today. No one is really sure what happened. The label had confirmed that the band would be playing at 12:30, but somewhere along the line, that message didn't get to the band. They were already packed up and on their way to Canada early this morning. If you came out for the show and left after waiting too long, you can come back in and give us your e-mail. Polyvinyl said they'll send us some swag to make up for the mishap! Fortunately, we've still got one more awesome show going on today, it's just not at saki... Join us at The Burlington tonight at 9pm for a "saki presents" show with Magic Milk, The Shivas (Portland) & The Sueves! All three bands are awesome. We can't wait for the show! We'll also have copies of the Ryan Duggan-designed show poster for sale - only $5!

Paste Magazine: Rennie Sparks Shares Her Paintings

Paste Magazine asks 24 musicians about their love of painting and to share some of their work. Rennie Sparks of The Handsome Family does an interesting little Q&A (below) about her love of dog food cans and the difference between painting & writing music. See profiles of more musicians, including Mindy Smith, Robyn Hitchcock, Joseph Arthur, Ani DiFranco, and more by reading the article in Paste.

Rennie Sparks of Handsome Family
Rennie Sparks sings and plays banjo and bass in Handsome Family, alongside her husband Brett. The Chicago band has released nine albums since 1994, including Uncut magazine's Country Album of the Year, Through the Trees in 1998.

When did you first start painting?
About five years ago, long after I started playing music.

Are you inspired by a particular painter or artistic movement?
I was actually inspired to start painting by dog food. I used to wander around gas station mini-marts while on tour looking for something to cheer me up. I noticed that whenever I looked at dog food cans, that inevitably have very eager looking dogs depicted on them, I would feel much happier. I started collecting dog food cans then, and I now have a collection of them from all over the world. One day at home I decided to try to paint a really happy dog face. After that I couldn't stop trying to paint animal utopias.

How does painting differ from music as a creative outlet for you?
My paintings are always insanely joyful, but my music is usually somber and mournful. I can paint from an animal's point of view, but can only play music from a human pov.

Where can we see your work in person?
Every painting I've done has been sold. I have a few portraits of my own dead pets hanging at my home in Albuquerque. You can see tons of sold work on my website, handsomefamily.com then follow link to paintings.

Vinnie the Intern #13: A Playlist for the Fall

In the middle of summer I pieced together a playlist of how to stay cool. Sadly the final days of summer are rapidly approaching. The grandiose sounds of summer will be traded for sparse, brittle sounds of fall such as leaves crunching and blowing in the wind. This playlist should complement that well.

From Stereolab and Royksopp's thumping and chiming that beg to be played at a backyard get together to the downright dreary and unsettling "Sad Pony Guerilla Girl" (most notably in the Life and Live version 2:55 and on), this playlist should take you through the end of summer and get you ready for the harsh winter that will be here before we know it.
King Krule - Rock Bottom/Octopus - Single (9/24/2012)

Note that the track, Zoo Kid's "Rock Bottom," is an early version of the song by the young man now known as King Krule. Check out the new version here. A song that builds, finds its clarity in its climax with repeating the final lines from "Empty Cans" by the Streets off of his album A Grand Don't Come For Free.

"It is the end of something I did not want to end. The beginning of hard times to come.
But something that was not meant to be is done. And this is the start of what was."

Additional Details:
1. Stereolab - "Brakhage" - Dots & Loops
2. Royksopp - "Poor Leno" - Melody A.M.
3. Netherfriends - "Don't Invite Me" - Calling You Out
4. WHY? - "The Hoofs" - Elephant Eyelash
5. Atlas Sound - "Autumn Intro Cascading Into University Courtyard" - Bedroom Databank Vol. 2
6. Zoo Kid - "Rock Bottom" - U.F.O.W.A.V.E.
7. Sharks Keep Moving - "Cashmere, Washington" - Desert Strings And Drifters
8. Deerhunter - "Basement" - Turn It Up, Faggot
9. Xiu Xiu - "Sad Pony Guerilla Girl (Live)" - Life and Live
10. Misfits - "Halloween" - Legacy of Brutality
11. Gorillaz - "November Has Come" - Demon Days
12. The Sky Corvair - "Swallow Water" - Unsafe At Any Speed
13. Mount Eerie - "November 22 2003, 4:45 PM" - Seven New Songs of Mount Eerie
14. Atlas Sound - "Winter Vacation" - Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel
15. Sufjan Stevens - "The Winter Solstice" - Peace: Songs for Christmas, Vol. V

saki presents: Magic Milk, The Shivas & The Sueves!

We are what you might call "super psyched" to present a bill with Chicago's Magic Milk & The Sueves, & Portland's The Shivas, at The Burlington next Tuesday (9/4)! We always love slapping our name on a show and saying, "HEY! LOOK AT US. WE'RE SAKI! LOOK AT OUR NAAAAME ON THIS BILL," but that's just because we're gluttons for attention. This time it's all about the bands. We're so excited to present three bands that we genuinely love. If we weren't presenting this show, we'd be there anyway. That's saying a lot, because we are LAZY people.

Like most Burlington shows, we'll kick it off at 9 with The Sueves, then The Shivas & Magic Milk will close out the night. If you haven't heard any of these bands, check out those links above & listen to a few tracks. They just might be your 3 new favorite bands!

Thanks to The Burlington for letting us take over their space, and thanks to Ryan Duggan for this awesome poster! If you want one to take home and commemorate this momentous occasion, we've got some extra prints that we're selling for $5. You can pick one up at the shop, or at the show!
