Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell is a visually inventive, heartfelt documentary as haunting as its remarkable subject, the late cellist/singer/composer Russell, a gay Iowa farm boy who eventually found himself in New York where his uncompromising, unclassifiable music made fans out of Allen Ginsberg, Phillip Glass, and Ernie Brooks of the Modern Lovers, who called Russell "one of the greatest songwriters ever, greater than the Beatles."
