Well, it turns out Pitchfork's been doing it as well. Only instead of your socially lubricated buddy ranting about how much he used to LOVE that Korn record, they ask a heap of notable musicians, producers, etc. to pick their brains about what songs and albums they remember best at 5 year intervals. 5-10-15-20 has featured Kurt Vile, Moby, RZA, Mount Eerie, and Ted Leo most recently, just to name a few.
I'm not a devoted Pitchfork reader, but I think the feature puts an interesting spin on a typical interview query. It also makes me think of Link Wray's "Five and Ten". Win, win.
I remember getting a 45 of "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Right Myself a Letter" by Billy Williams and thinking it was the greatest thing I'd ever heard, which it probably was. I would play it over and over and over. Must have nicked it from my parents' stash.
ReplyDeleteI also remember around that time "Yellow Submarine," "Joy to the World" (Three Dog Night version), and "Puff the Magic Dragon" as songs that delighted me on the radio.
I wish I could say we were spinning "Real Cool Time" at my house in Midland, but I'll doubt there was even a copy of that album within 120 miles of my house.
"Joy To the World" is quite possibly still one of my favorite songs ever.
