Songs Of Farewell & Departure: A Tribute To Hum

SONGS OF FAREWELL AND DEPARTURE: A TRIBUTE TO HUM from MDfilms.net on Vimeo.

A much deserved tribute to beloved 90's space rockers Hum will be released on 9/6 via Pop Up Records. After viewing the above clip with brief samples of each track, I do not have high hopes. A few sound promising, but as expected, most seem to be lackluster atmospheric bands sticking closely to the original tracks. The influence of Hum surely branched out further than that, and a little more variation would have been nice - Benoit Pioulard has expressed how much he loved the album Downward is Heavenward - I'd be very interested to hear a Hum track transformed into his blissed-out dream-pop aesthetic. Other artists like Justin Broadrick or True Widow would still make sense, but would likely take the tracks in more interesting directions. Still, if this tribute causes more people to check out Hum that would have otherwise been unaware, Songs Of Farewell & Departure has served some purpose. For those who never gave Hum a listen, You'd Prefer An Astronaut and Downward is Heavenward are essential. Below is the audio for one of my favorites, "I'd Like Your Hair Long." The final minute of the track gives me goosebumps every time.
