saki newsletter 3/5/13!

As always, welcome to the weekly saki newsletter! As you should all be aware by now, we've got a BIG week in store for you. This Thursday we are hosting the March edition of our monthly Off The Record listening party series, sponsored by the city of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, and this one's a doozy. We are beyond excited to welcome one of our favorite bands, Low to the shop! They will be playing a selection of songs primarily from their new Sub Pop album, The Invisible Way, out 3/19! Now, that could be enough right there, but NO, we'll also have a Q&A after Low's set with the members of the band, as well as Jeff Tweedy! Jeff recorded and produced The Invisible Way with Low, right here in Chicago at the famed Wilco loft. The performance will start at 7pm, but we will begin distributing wristbands (to keep track of capacity) at 6pm. Obviously, we have a capacity limit in our fairly small space and we have to observe that, so we can NOT guarantee entry. Please show up early if you're concerned that you won't be able to get in. See you Thursday!

We've got some other awesome stuff in the works for you later in the month, including in-stores with An Aesthetic Anaesthetic, War Brides and Passerines, a "saki presents" show at the Burlington with Zelienople, Radere and Scott Cortez, another Punch-Up movie night at Lincoln Hall, and of course, Creative Control on the last Friday of the month. Check the events listings and Facebook events for more details on those!

This multi-instrumentalist, band-leader, & composer was for decades the musical patriarch of the Mississippi Hill Country. He & his band were fixtures at dances, picnics, & frolics throught the right triangle formed by Memphis, the Delta, & the Hill Country. These recordings contributed to a broader perspective of black vernacular instrumentation w/ their inclusion of the fiddle & banjo of the string band, the fife & drum ensemble, & the cane panpipes or "quills." The music is loose & wild & of a style seldom heard

Release Date:  March 12, 2013
**EXCLUSIVE! 03/12 STREET DATE. Let's get this out of the way 1st - Carmen Villain used to be a very successful model. Her face has appeared on the covers of Vogue & Nylon, & high profile cosmetic ad campaigns. It turns out Carmen Hillestad (CARMEN VILLAIN) has been a spy in the house of fashion. Behind the scenes, she was channeling her frustrations into a set of songs with a defiantly DIY underground free-rock sound. Now she's stepping off the glossy page & emerging as a major new songwriting voice & multi-instrumentalist. Behind the angelic face lurks a villain. With acid in her airbrush, she reminds us of This Heat, Bikini Kill, Sonic Youth, Royal Trux & NO EXPORT OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA
