saki newsletter 4/16/13!

Gadzooks! Everything is crazy here in Record Store World, what with Record Store Day looming and all. Before we get into all that, we'd like to thank Implodes, Chris Hefner, DCASE, Provenance Food and Wine, Epitonic and Kranky Records for helping us make this past Friday's Off The Record with Implodes such a wonderful event! Recurring Dream has been on repeat around here for weeks and it just keeps better every time we listen. Stay tuned for details on next month's Off The Record with JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound!

We'd also like to thank Joe Kwaczala and all of the folks who came out for the very first Scriptreaders at saki. We had a great time. Scriptreaders will continue every Sunday at saki throughout April and into the first week of May. It's a really fun opportunity to hear some new and often really funny work from local comics and screenwriters!

Ok, so hopefully you all know by now that this Saturday is Record Store Day. As always, we try to make RSD at saki as much fun as possible. Sure, we all want those limited releases, but what are you to do all day after you get that Liquid Swords box set!? Well, we've got an in-store marathon running from 1pm to 7pm (we'll announce the full lineup tomorrow with BV Chicago) followed by a short break and then another live taping of the Revolutions Per Minute podcast with hosts Joe McAdam and Nick Rouley and their guests Blizzard Babies!

That's just the meat of it. We've also got CHIRP Radio coming out to give away prizes from CHIRP, saki and a hand-picked number of other local stores and venues, through their CHIRP-Plinko game (you may remember it from last year)! CHIRP DJs will also be spinning in between the bands all day!

If you're one of the true record nuts who wake up early on RSD to line up in front of the store, we've got you covered! We open at 9am, but around 8:30 our friends from Santah and Gaslight Coffee Roasters will be serving complimentary coffee and playing a few songs for the true believers! It's our little way of saying thanks for coming out early on RSD. We hope you come and enjoy it!

For the most possible info on saki's RSD festivities, and what RSD titles we have in stock, check the RSD 2013 page on our blog!

Reflecting The Light cover art
  Black Bug    Reflecting The Light
Label:  HoZac Records
Format:  LP
Catalog Number:  hzr127lp
Release Date:  March 26, 2013
Vinyl version. LTD TO 550. A terrifying throb of sinister synthesizers, endless shadows, & mysterious dried blood, this transplanted Swedish band now evading the authorities in Bordeaux, France is a seductively subtle nightmare you won't be able to pull yourself away from. Breaking out from their insidious debut LP's screech & grind, the reborn BLACK BUG carries their torch even further down the dimly-lit well of desperation, creating a far more atmospheric, horror film soundtrack-type feel between it's gnarled bursts of blown-out Spits-style synth punk energy

Bonnie Prince Billy & Mick Turner    Get on Jolly
Label:  Palace

Paper Moon cover art
  Georgiana Starlington    Paper Moon
Label:  HoZac Records

Catalog Number:  hzr131lp
Release Date:  March 26, 2013
Vinyl version. LTD TO 550. Debut album from Julie & Jack Hines (K-HOLES/EX-BLACK LIPS). No K-Holes-style punk skronk here, this band utilizes iconically lonesome lap steel to great effect, drizzling a honest & raw pure country warmth over these songs like falling magnolia blossoms. Like Johnny & June picking through the Velvert Underground's songbook, or if the Gun Club & Mazzy Star met in some alternate universe & cobbled together a collection of hazy death ballads for the future generations

White Crosses cover art
  Population    White Crosses
Label:  HoZac Records
Format:  7"
Catalog Number:  hzr129
Release Date:  March 26, 2013
An impeccable specimen of jarring post-punk force, met w/ melodic flourishes & kept in time w/ a furious rhythm. Just as Christian Death uniquely emerged from the shards of the California hardcore scene over 30 years ago, these key members of Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood hardcore community delve deep into the early 80s underworld, artfully intertwining tenebrous synth lines w/ desolate bass runs to form a monolithic, impenetrable coldness. Ltd to 375

Cinderella Sizzle cover art
  Rainbow Gun Show    Cinderella Sizzle
Label:  HoZac Records
Format:  7"
Catalog Number:  hzr130
Release Date:  March 26, 2013
Formed as a bedroom synth pop project a few years ago, & now fully realized as a powerful Chicago live unit, RAINBOW GUN SHOW have arrived. W/ their unusually cerebral production, a series of interestingly intricate melodic bridges, all liberally doused in handclaps & inebriated confidence, they've managed to pull ahead of their contemporaries & carve out a place for themselves w/ their hooks & snarl. RIYL Redd kross, Soft Cell, White Fence, Flamin' Groovies. Ltd to 375

Mercurial cover art
  Schonwald    Mercurial
Label:  HoZac Records
Format:  7"
Catalog Number:  hzr128
Release Date:  March 26, 2013
Debut US single from this Italian band. They emerge here slithering w/ unsettling vibes right from the start. A chilling & hopelessly bleak drum-machine rhythm sets the tone, parting the waves of rippling darkness into a massive surge of inescapable, hushed-yet-crushing electronic melancholia. European post-punk at it's finest. Ltd to 375

Label:  Saddle Creek
Format:  CD
Catalog Number:  lbj186cd
Release Date:  April 16, 2013
Their 6th LP & first on Saddle Creek is a true scrappy & scratchy return-to-form, w/ all the raw power & unhinged adolescent energy that made their early LPs so insanely enjoyable. Lyrically, the ablum is a brash & iressponsible ode to human violence, a black celebration of the inevitability of war & death. A dark & yet joyous affair. NO EXPORT
