saki newsletter 12/31/13!

Obviously not a ton going on this past weekend. We ate too much. We drank too much. We now have more socks than we know what to do with... BUT there is plenty going on at saki this weekend!

On Friday, we've got a very special Freak Happening New Year show with Nick and Goodrich! In fact, we've got a lot of Nick and Goodrich going on this month. Friday's show is in lieu of the Freak Happening that we would normally have on the last Friday of the month, but we'll also have our regularly scheduled Freak Happening at the end of January, AND a very special show hosted by Nick and Goodrich on January 9th in honor of Joe McAdam's brief return to Chicago - Joe McAdam: LA Failure. That's a whole lot of comedy for January and probably even more half naked Nick Rouley!

On Saturday, we have the opening reception for January's art show with Homeroom Chicago and Spudnik Press. The opening will feature live music from Homeroom's 10x10 contributors and the usual snacks and drinks!

Sunday, we have a Cosmic In-store with The Humminbird, Moon Bros and Laughing Eye Weeping Eye!

So, great start for the new year! We hope you can all make it out! No vlogcastisode this week because we were all out of town and couldn't shoot it. We promise that next week's will be extra awkward to make up for it!

Upcoming events:

Friday, January 3rd @ 7:30pm
A Freak Happening New Year with Nick Rouley and Goodrich Gevaart!

Saturday, January 4th @ 6pm
Ten x Ten Listening Party and Art Opening!

Sunday, January 5th @ 4pm
The Humminbird, Moon Bros and Laughing Eye Weeping Eye!

Thursday, January 9th @ 7pm
Joe McAdam: LA Failure hosted by Nick and Goodrich!

saki newsletter 12/24/13!

Merrrrrry Christmas! We're open 12-4 today (Tuesday) if you need any last minute gifts for anyone, or for yourself... we know you do that, it's OK! We'll reopen on Thursday with normal hours until New Year's Eve when we'll be open 12-4 again, and then closed on the 1st and 2nd.

We don't have any big events coming up until January 3rd, but that's a very special Freak Happening New Year show! We don't have any inside scoop on the show, but let's be honest, there's a good chance you'll see Nick dressed as Baby New Year and Goodrich as Father Time... we know those dudes all too well.

Then, on the 4th we have the opening reception for Homeroom Chicago and Spudnik Press' Ten x Ten art show and listening party!

We're also very excited to announce that our old friend, Joe McAdam will be visiting from LA and we're putting on a special one-night-only show for him on the 9th. Joe McAdam: LA Failure will be hosted Nick and Goodrich!

Oh, hey, here's a short and sweet vlogcastisode for you! We were a little busy this week, so we had to get... creative. We're idiots, but we're lovable idiots, we hope.

Oh, yeah, you heard that right... that's a ton of the best releases of 2013 for 20% off until the end of the year!! Crazy? Maybe... we've compiled a bunch of our best of picks in our staff picks section and on the rack up by the register where we normally keep our weekly new release sale items.

Once in a Lifetime: Co-Ed Call Girl-- TONIGHT!!!

Once in a Lifetime, a comedy show/movie night presented by saki and Everything is Terrible, celebrates the horrifying world of Lifetime Original Movies. Each month, some of our favorite comedians will provide commentary over the screening of a made-for-Lifetime movie.

This month, Katie McVay, Kristin Clifford, and Andy Fleming goof on Co-Ed Call Girl!

Lifetime staple Tori Spelling accidentally stumbles into sex work in Co-Ed Call Girl (1996). Bookish Joanna (Spelling) is kind of a buzzkill, so her roommates prank her by giving her number to an escort service. One bangin’ party at a Malibu beach house later, and Joanna finds herself “dating” older men for money. But all the Versace and lipliner in the world can’t conceal Joanna’s shame...

In addition to other food and drink specials, Lincoln Hall will, once again, be running the wildly popular $3 white wine spritzer special for all you cool moms out there!

saki newsletter 12/17/13!

Oh man, what a bittersweet weekend! On the one hand, we had two incredible Off The Record parties with four of our favorite bands, but on the other hand, they were likely the last OTRs, at least for a little while. Our deal with the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is up, but we are talking with DCASE and Elastic Arts to work on some similar future events. We're very excited to see what will come of that! For now, we would just like to thank Evan Hydzik, Ryley Walker, Pillars and Tongues, Den, Fake Limbs, Melissa Geils and Provenance Food and Wine for helping us put on such great events this past weekend! We'd also like to thank the band Marrow for playing an in-store on Sunday. We would tell you to go see them at Schubas on Thursday, but that show is SOLD OUT, so congrats Marrow!

Things will obviously be slowing down a little over the next few weeks with the holidays and all, but tomorrow night (Wednesday) we have another Once In A Lifetime movie night at Lincoln Hall! The folks at Everything Is Terrible are supplying one of Tori Spelling's best works, Co-Ed Call Girl and we've got Kristin Clifford, Andy Fleming and Katie McVay on the mic's providing hilarious commentary. Come for the awful movie and the funny comedians, stay for the $3 white wine spritzers! Show starts at 8!

After the holidays we've got a very special Freak Happening, not at its regularly scheduled time. Instead of doing a show on the last Friday in December we've moved it to January 3rd. Different date, same dumb comedy show! It's been a while since Nick's been half naked on stage, so if we all pray real hard until January 3rd maybe we can make it happen! On the 4th we have the opening reception for our January art show with Homeroom Chicago. The night will double as an art opening and listening party for their latest Ten x Ten release, pairing ten musicians with ten visual artists. It's going to be a good'n!

Make sure you check out our 'store hours' page on the blog to stay on top of when we'll be closed over the holiday season! For example, we're closing at 6pm tonight for our staff holiday party. Now you know!

Oh, and hey, in case you didn't just read all of that, here it is in video form:

Weekly new release sale!

Each week saki will be offering a handful of new releases for 20% OFF! You can check the blog, Facebook, Twitter, or our newsletter, to find out which titles will be discounted. We'll choose 2-3 titles each week and they'll be discounted for their entire first week of release!

There aren't as many new releases this time of year so we're going to do something extra special this week, you can get ANY title listed on our saki/CTD staff Best Of 2013 lists for 20% off! We're keeping many of these records in our staff picks section by the front window to make them easier to find!

Here are a few that we (obviously) highly recommend:

Limiñanas - Costa Blanca

Once again recorded at their home in the south of France, "Costa Blanca" pushes the envelope of their signature Franc-o-phonic sound; the coloeur cafe cool of Gainsbourg, the hypnotic drone of VU-era Cale, and the spiky fuzz of Davie Allan. This time around the band laces the tunes with a dramatic flair of French New Wave soundtracks and the percussive sonic accents found in Morricone's work in "Il Gruppo", for it's funk-laced tracks incorporated with elements of avant-classical and experimental sonic elements

Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light

Final installment in a trilogy of solo albums. Vocal contributions from Justin Vernon (BON IVER) on 4 songs. Signals the full flourishing of Stetson's unique talents as both composer and performer, pressing his arsenal of virtuosic saxophone techniques into the service of vivid, impassioned and conceptually astute songcraft.

Darkside - Psychic

Collaborative duo of guitarist/composer Dave Harrington and electronic producer Nicolas Jaar. They summon a hybrid of electronic music, psychedelic rock, and dancefloor techno with the sort of artistic depth and breadth for which the term 'progressive' was coined.

Off The Record year-end blowout with Ryley Walker, Pillars and Tongues, Den, and Fake Limbs!

Back in January we kicked off a full year of monthly Off The Record listening parties at saki with an awesome set from Brokeback, playing the entirety of Brokeback and the Black Rock live! Since then we've hosted some amazing parties with Low, Mikal Cronin, Owen, Implodes, several Trouble In Mind bands, and many more. Of all the great shows we were able to put on with the help of the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), there were still a bunch of bands that we were unable to work with for one reason or another.

There are still many bands that we won't be able to do an Off The Record with, but to end 2013, we've got a whole weekend of awesome shows planned with some of our favorite bands! On Friday, December 13th we have an Off The Record double-header with Ryley Walker and Pillars and Tongues! Then, the very next day, we'll have Den and Fake Limbs for a second double-header! As always, these OTR parties will be BYOB and our friends from Provenance Food and Wine will be providing some tasty snacks for everyone!

We're sad that these will likely be the last OTRs, but c'mon, can you think of a better way to end such an incredible year!? Come out, enjoy the FREE food and some of the best local music, and help us say goodbye to 2013 with some of our favorite bands!

Friday, December 13th, 6-9pm
Off The Record with Ryley Walker and Pillars and Tongues!

Saturday, December 14th @ 3pm
Off The Record with Den and Fake Limbs!

Both shows are BYOB with FREE food from Provenance Food and Wine!

Tuesday, December 3

First things first, folks - thanks for not stabbing, or macing, or tazing anyone in our store this past weekend. You all came in and peacefully bought your Record Store Day Black Friday releases in a calm and orderly fashion and we appreciate it! That's not to say we didn't have our camera phones ready... who doesn't want to be YouTube famous!? We kid, we kid. All jokes aside, we had a great time on Black Friday AND Small Business Saturday AND regular ol' Sunday. Thanks for coming out!

Coming up this weekend we have the opening reception of Arnold Klein's photography exhibit 'MsPerception' and a release party for Rookie Yearbook Two with readings by Tavi and other Chicago Rookies, and a live set from The Lemons!

TY SEGALL's new stoner thrashers not only totally murdered this set at San Francisco leather-daddy hangout The SF Eagle, but it was Ty's birthday and he blew out his birthday cake candles mid-song, didn't miss a beat, and that moment is forever etched into this record (there's a photo too).
