saki is thrilled to present These Roads: Posters & Prints by Kathleen Judge. 

These Roads showcases pieces that highlight places, landscape, light, and motion. A full perspective of Judge’s recognizable style will be on display through a combination of art prints and show posters. 

Kathleen Judge has worked in printmaking, animation, storyboarding, illustration, and created video projection artwork for touring bands and theater. She is well-known for her work within the music community, creating classic posters and album covers for the likes of Neko Case, The Hideout, Daniel Knox, Devil in a Woodpile, and more.

Judge’s hand-printed images and illustrations have been included in books such as Gig Posters - Vol. 1, Rockin’ Down The Highway, Rock Paper Show- Vol. 1, and Growing Up In Slavery, and she shares a Grammy Nomination with Neko Case for Best Recording Package for Middle Cyclone. Judge has created silkscreen prints since 2001 and recently has been developing video projections and theater work with One Degree Off, OperaMatic, and The Hideout. Kathleen Judge has shown her work around Chicago in spaces such as the Chicago Cultural Center, the City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower, Millenium Park, Chicago History Museum, Lill Street Gallery, Transit Gallery, Chicago Printmakers Collaborative, Chicago Tourism Center, A + D gallery, & more. She has also shown her work worldwide in cities such as Berlin, Memphis, Brooklyn, Brighton, Paris, Minneapolis, Savannah, and in the Netherlands.

The opening will also include live music from Man is Man. Capturing the souls of both the lost and the delusional within their intricately wound songs, Man is Man explores the interplay of melody and drama, rhythm and death, revolution and defeat with an unblinking eye.

This weekend is busy for us at Carrot Top Records. Very busy. Very exciting.

Megan Reilly comes in town with her band – Steve Goulding (Mekons), James Mastro (Bongos), & Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu) – this weekend to celebrate her recent album The Well. There are two chances to see her while she's in town on Saturday.

In other great Carrot Top news, Speck Mountain will be putting out their third album, Badwater, with us in late summer! After months of an intricate mixing process, Speck Mountain passed off their tapes to our friends at Chicago Mastering this week. We are all giddy with excitement, so join us Saturday at the Hideout to hear some rocking new tracks from Speck Mountain!

Mariachi, Rock For Kids, & Andrew Bird

A whole bunch of my favorites worlds all in one place! In brief: Mariachi, rock & music education to empower youngins, & Andrew Bird.

Just saw this video posted by our pals at the Hideout Inn of Andrew Bird's sponsored Rock For Kids scholarship winner, 14 year old Paloma Carrasco. It's behind the scenes footage of Paloma practicing La Cigarra with Andrew and guitar player Colin Bunn. For those who don't know me, I used to play violin and vihuela in a Los Angeles mariachi group.  La Cigarra is an amazing piece, and is very difficult for vocalists...you have to really have the range to hit those extreme falsetto jumps, and almost more importantly, have the confidence and lungs to seriously belt. Paloma can really do both..bummed I missed the live performance at the block party this year! Will have to keep my eyes out for her in the Chicago mariachi circles.

Antietam by Dmitry Samarov

Dmitry Samarov is a modern renaissance man - artist, blogger, cab driver, and all of those things it seems, he does well. What makes a good cab driver? I would say someone who knows how to get you where you're going at the cheapest rate and doesn't scream into his own blue tooth while he gets you there. A good artist? Well, that's subjective, I suppose, but we certainly like Dmitry's work! And a good blogger... that takes consistency, humor, and at least a remedial command of the written word. Dmitry's blog, HACK: Stories From A Chicago Cab, is one of the best reads you'll find online. Soooo, check, check, and CHECK!

Keep your eyes peeled for a possible upcoming art show by Dmitry at saki sometime in the fall, and for now, check out his sketches, including this one from last nights Antietam record release show at the almighty Hideout.

Intuit turns twenty!

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive & Outsider Art are celebrating their 20th anniversary at The Hideout on June 10th! You know they've been around for a while because they managed to snatch up the domain art.org... you can't sleep on that one!

Help Intuit celebrate 20 years of promoting and showcasing the work of self-taught and outsider artists with musical guests Lord of the Yum-Yum, Casts Spells and Bottomless Pit! Make sure you enter the raffle for a chance to win some saki gift certificates!

Tara Key is on a roll!

Musician and visual artist, Tara Key is on a roll as of late. She's got an amazing new show going up at saki right now - the official opening is tomorrow night - and a show with her band's Antietam and Rizzo/Key at The Hideout on Saturday!

The opening of ELEMENTAL by Tara Key starts at 6pm tomorrow night with beverages and hors d'oeuvres provided by saki. Come see how Tara has transformed our space onto a living, breathing, piece of art.

Then join us on Saturday for Antietam's record release show at The Hideout with Rizzo/Key and The Horse's Ha!

The Coctails - Big In Japan

The Coctails will always be a Chicago favorite, but they have also discovered a massive fan base on the other side of the globe...read more at Timeout Chicago.



'“I think people in Japan are better collectors and musicologists about the U.S. than people in the U.S.,” Greenberg says. “Maybe because of their distance, they can see things more fully.”



For now, the Coctails remain unreunited stateside, but there’s talk of bringing the band back just to tour Japan again. “[Japan] was awesome and flattering and great,” Greenberg says. “I hope they invite us back.”



Prewitt and Greenberg team up at the Hideout (1354 W Wabansia Ave, 773-227-4433) on June 20 to open for Liam Hayes and Plush.'

Hideout Announces Eleventh Dream Day Residency

"One of the most resilient and criminally underappreciated bands to rise from the Midwestern underground community, the career of the noisy guitar unit Eleventh Dream Day was a textbook study in alt-rock endurance; despite a nightmarish major-label tenure, ill-timed roster changes, and commercial indifference, the group persevered, ultimately emerging as elder statesmen of the flourishing Chicago independent scene of the mid-'90s." - AMG

After 2006's Zeroes & Ones (Thrill Jockey) the band has limited themselves to a hand-full of live performances, some of which were less than accessible to many fans.  

Earlier this week The Hideout announced that this May the group will hold down a Sunday residency. At $8 a ticket it's well worth making it to at least one of the shows, and if you're ONLY gonna make it to ONE... on Sunday, May 16th they'll be joined by Yo La Tengo as The Condo Fucks. Whether it's weeks in advance (as of yet pre-sale tickets are not available) or 15 minutes after the doors open, this is gonna sell out so mark your calendars.
