We could hardly keep up with everything last weekend at saki! Even though we're pretty exhausted today, we have plenty of new memories to kick off our week thanks to ROOKIE, Tavi, Tiny Fireflies, everyone who came out for Creative Control, Joe McAdam, Owen, everyone who participated in the After Hours Concatenating Pedals show, especially Ben from Glad Cloud, Human Elephant, Jack & Ace, and Rob from Numero Group! And definitely everyone who came out to twiddle knobs, zine with us, or take in some music. It was really pretty cool. Read the nitty gritties and check out some pictures after the jump!

NYC-based Fractious Press is coming to town! In between trips to the John Hancock Tower and Bulls games, Buzz Poole and Veronica Liu of Fractious, joined by Chicagoan writer friends John Paul Davis and Mairead Case, will be reading at Saki on Friday, October 29 @ 6:30pm. BUZZ POOLE is the author of Madonna of the Toast, a look at surprising iconography, named by the New Statesman as one of 2007¹s Best Underground Books. He has written about books, art, design, and music for numerous publications including the Believer, the Village Voice, Print, the San Francisco Chronicle, and theMillions. I Like to Keep My Troubles on the Windy Side of Things is his first collection of fiction.
VERONICA LIU's writing and visual art have appeared in Broken Pencil, Quick Fiction, Get Ahead, and other journals and zines. In 2010 she is the recipient of grants from the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance for the completion of her novel, the Manhattan Community Arts Fund to coordinate an arts fair, and the Citizens Committee of New York City for a video oral history project on immigration. She is cofounder of the publishing crew Fractious Press and the online community radio station Washington Heights Free Radio.
JOHN PAUL DAVIS's poems have appeared in journals such as Columbia Poetry Review, Cordite Poetry Review, WordRiot and anthologies such as Off The Cuffs,Rebel Voices, and The Letter All Your Friends Have Written You. He is editor and designer of Bestiary Magazine. He is a regular contributor to the literary variety shows The Paper Machete and The Encyclopedia Show. He was a 2009 Vox Ferus writer in residence. He's represented Chicago multiple times at the National Poetry Slam and is a Real Talk Ave founding member and artist. He lives in Chicago. You can learn more about him at www.johnpauldavis.org.
MAIREAD CASE has published fiction at featherproof and THE2NDHAND, criticism in Punk Planet, Pitchfork, and Village Voice Media, and comics for Light in the Attic Records (with David Lasky). She's edited The Journal of Ordinary Thought, Proximity, literago.org, and more. Mairead founded the writing program at a juvenile justice center in Indiana, co-organized the 2010 Bronx Museum Book Fair, and curated a radio show about dreams for Neighborhood Public Radio at the 2008 Whitney Biennial. She works at Columbia College Chicago.
FRACTIOUS PRESS is a small artist-run publishing condo founded in the Bronx and Washington Heights, New York, in 2005. Since its first release, which was named in the Village Voice’s Best of New York 2005, the press has published emerging artists and writers of fiction, poetry, comics, and zines, and has occasionally hosted day-long zine festivals in Upper Manhattan. The next zine fest, May Day at Ding Dong will be held on May 1, 2010, with support from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. ForeWord magazine called the press “innovative . . . a kind of counterculture collaborative.”

It Ain't Pretty
saki is now proud to be carrying one of the best fanzines around; Ugly Things. Writer and publisher Mike Stax has be been pouring his love for all things 60s rock into the UT pages for some 20 years. Profiles, interviews, reviews, rantings, features. There is no better place to get your garage, psych, beat, punk fix. Plain and simple.
The mag gets its name from the UK's legendary cult R&B and psych combo The Pretty Things. They got their name from the man who made the BEAT, Bo Diddley. 45 year later, UT still flys their freak flag proud.
Past issues have shed light on the likes of Nederbeat giants The Outsiders (not to be confused with the Ohio combo that hit big with "Time Won't Let Me"), The Chocolate Watch Band, The Missing Links, The Standells, The Troggs, The Seeds, Los Saicos, and of course, The Pretty Things.

UT's most recent issue (Summer/Fall 2010 #30) includes a feature on The Kinks accompanied by interviews conducted by Jon Savage (not the sex advise columnist, though we do love us some Savage Love), a profile on The Master Apprentices (War Or Hands Of Time" is just the tip of the iceberg), The Q'65, the phenomenally exhaustive reissue review section, and much more.
