Castlemania, the newest release from Thee Oh Sees, was met with great anticipation. The gritty psychedelic garage rock band has always been known for their versatility from album to album. However, this newest album proposes an optimism that was unexpected. The tin can vocals have been replaced with clearly audible verses and the feedback has been substituted by the tambourine. The sheer folkiness of the album is astonishing and although the musical capability of the band is in no way compromised, the main word that comes to mind when listening to Castlemania is: safe. While this listener is willing to concede that the kids will just love it, for me, Thee Oh Sees will always have that special chaos driven sludge-drone-garage-rock place in my heart. The newly released Singles Collection Vol. 1 & 2, however, is truly phenomenal and exemplifies the reasons why we listened to them in the first place.

Viva The Vagrants
If you're a vintage rock fan you already know there are a ton of reasons to love 1966. The Music Machine's "Talk Talk", The Seeds' "Pushin' Too Hard", The Standells "Why Pick On Me", The Alarm Clocks' "No Reason To Complain", Q'65' "The Life I Live", The Eyes' "I'm Rowed Out", The Monks' "Complication", the list could go on and on and on.

That gem and The Vagrants' impossibly awesome debut single "Oh Those Eyes" are getting the deluxe treatment from the good folks at Light In The Attic on I Can't Make A Friend 1965-1968. The CD and LP (180g vinyl) include liners from the all knowing Mike Stax, creator and editor of the Ugly Things, best damn garage, psych, beat, and punk zine around.

It Ain't Pretty
saki is now proud to be carrying one of the best fanzines around; Ugly Things. Writer and publisher Mike Stax has be been pouring his love for all things 60s rock into the UT pages for some 20 years. Profiles, interviews, reviews, rantings, features. There is no better place to get your garage, psych, beat, punk fix. Plain and simple.
The mag gets its name from the UK's legendary cult R&B and psych combo The Pretty Things. They got their name from the man who made the BEAT, Bo Diddley. 45 year later, UT still flys their freak flag proud.
Past issues have shed light on the likes of Nederbeat giants The Outsiders (not to be confused with the Ohio combo that hit big with "Time Won't Let Me"), The Chocolate Watch Band, The Missing Links, The Standells, The Troggs, The Seeds, Los Saicos, and of course, The Pretty Things.
"Wild Sounds From Past Dimensions"
UT's most recent issue (Summer/Fall 2010 #30) includes a feature on The Kinks accompanied by interviews conducted by Jon Savage (not the sex advise columnist, though we do love us some Savage Love), a profile on The Master Apprentices (War Or Hands Of Time" is just the tip of the iceberg), The Q'65, the phenomenally exhaustive reissue review section, and much more.
