Rahm Emanuel Twitter Doppleganger should be carried on the shoulders of average Chicagoans

Dan Zinker. Genius. Reason # one billion why this guy is a BENEFIT to Chicago. To Rahm Emanuel, probably not so much. I bet Dan could take Rahm in a fist fight. Punks don't fight fair, y'know.

The Stock Exchange, works of Chris Stock @ saki!

Opening Friday March 11, 6-9 PM
Hors d'oeuvres and beverages provided by saki.

Chicago, IL February 22, 2011 — saki, Logan Square’s premier record store, art gallery and performance space is proud to debut the work of local artist Chris Stock. Throughout March, saki will be hosting The Stock Exchange; a never before seen collection of sketches and paintings. Whether it was created with ink, acrylic, watercolor or oil paints, Stock’s work exhibits a reality that has been skewed and exaggerated by satire. His subtle use of phrasing combines vibrant images with comedic irony. Stock’s illustrations merge the style of Quentin Blake with the Gonzo that is Ralph Steadman.

Daytrottin' w/ Casiotone For The Painfully Alone

Not too long ago saki had the immense pleasure of hosting one of Casiotone For The Painfully Alone's last Chicago performances. The in-store, in case you weren't lucky enough to attend, was fantastic.

Recently, CFTPA and friends Otouto made a stop at the infamous Daytrotter "studios" and recorded the following sessions. Listen and download here.

You can visit our events page for the latest news on in-stores performances, art openings, and other events hosted by saki.

Woven Bones: Sister Ray & CVP2

The best blog for droning ambiance and scuzzy guitar riffs is Raven Sings The Blues. To prove their worth, here's an instrumental cover of VU's "Sister Ray" by Woven Bones that RSTB just posted.

Speaking of Woven Bones, they were on the first Casual Victim Pile, which I highly recommend for all fans of young, unadulterated, garage and punk. OH, and speaking of Casual Victim Pile, there's a second edition of the comp. coming out soon!

You can hear all of CVP2 at bandcamp, and then you can pick it up at saki in the next few weeks!

So, that's four awesome things you now know if you didn't already: Raven Sings The Blues, Woven Bones, Casual Victim Pile, & CVP2! You learn four somethings new every day.

Holy used records!

If any of you frequent our little shop, you know that in our infancy we haven't had a HUGE used selection. Well, things still aren't where we'd like them to be (read: sell us your records), but we're getting there. We just did a pretty great used buy-in so you should definitely come check it out! Here's a few items we thought we'd let you know about:

Talking Heads - Remain In Light (w/ lyric sheet + original sleeve)
Bauhaus - 1979-1983
The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
Brian Eno/David Byrne - My Life In The Bush With Ghosts
Violent Femmes - S/T
Revolting Cocks - No Devotion
Pink Floyd - Meddle & Wish You Were Here
Robert Fripp/Brian Eno - No Pussyfooting

... and a bunch more stuff from the likes of The Stones, The Beatles, New Order, Naked Raygun, King Crimson, The Clash, Bowie, Black Sabbath, The Specials, Blondie, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Hall & Motherfucking Oates, and MUCH, MUCH MORE.

The Power of Fear

Aside from whatever's been going on with The Cubs for the last one hundred and two years, it is my belief that there are only two emotional forces at play for homo sapiens: Love and Fear. Everything else inhabits a sublet from one of those two primary kinetics.

FUCK FEAR.

No Sweat

This gem from Northern Ireland's Rip Off records, and more like it, can be found, lovingly compiled, on the recent LP offering from Sing Sing records.

Of course, you can get your copy right here.

The night The Smiths stole the show at The Hacienda and Changed Music

"On February 4th 1983, The Smiths were booked to play the Hacienda in Manchester, England, as support to 52nd Street, a funk band signed to Factory Records. The audience was there to see the headliners, but it was the best band that Tony Wilson never signed who stole the night."

Butterflies feat. John Malkovich

Best to save this one for about an hour or two after lunch, just to be on the safe side. Maybe better to have a hand to hold.

Anybody foolish enough to think Malkovich doesn't live for is art is an ignorant, babbling idiot. My guess is he spent the better part of a day doing this, was paid in water crackers and green tea, and knows that his name alone will bring the majority of the traffic for this stylistically odd short.

Much respect, Mr. Malkovich, and kudos Mr. Miller, whoever you are.

Anika on Fader TV

Anika's self-titled debut made a few Best Of lists here at saki, but she hasn't done a ton of press or touring for it yet. Here she is talking to a VERY scared looking young man for FADER TV. To give the interviewer some credit, she is extremely attractive and I'd be nervous too...

Borders finally bites it. More room for indies.

This has been discussed in the music biz for nearly four years, at least as far as I am aware. We knew it was only a matter of time, as they kept getting extensions and squeaking by on payments. Still, we had pressure from labels who wanted their stuff in there because their bands did, without much thought to whether or how they would get paid. The eventual "payment" with skids of returns was not even an afterthought for them. With an eye to the longterm health of both labels and distributor, we did our best to resist this lunacy.

During times of contraction, there is always a silver lining for someone who is both looking for it and willing to take advantage of the opportunity that presents itself. In fact, if you go back to the very first post on this blog, you will find my view that the seeds of this go back to the late 80's. Sales of music have always been cyclical. For the large, soulless chains, music has cycled through times of money maker, money loser, loss leader, and back again. I have marked these cycles by watching the music bins at the big box stores move, as if under control of unseen tidal forces, which were really digit-pushing accountants, from front to back to front to back, while shrinking and expanding in size like ocean troughs. A recent walk through a Best Buy in Austin, for example, revealed a music section that was pretty hard to find, sporting far fewer racks that were themselves sparsely populated.

Through these cycles, indie shops have flourished, been eaten, scraped by, and even recently reappeared.

While much of the world laments the loss of their neighborhood-anchoring, friendly behemoth, it actually presents an opportunity for creative, music loving entrepreneurs to sprout through the cracks in those neighborhood sidewalks. Create novel dens of community. Go local. Engage the neighborhood. Take advantage off the fabulous creative talent and resources that we have all around us.

Quit whining and go do something. It's DIY time again.

We've been enamored of this, and other Hecker releases, here for a while but...does absence make the heart grow fonder? You bet it does. Despite a brief delay at the LP pressing plant, the 2xLPs to are to arrive quite soon from what we understand! So keep your eyes peeled.

All Your Base Are Belong to Us turns 10

The world's "first internet meme" has turned 10 years old, which baffles me. Where has all the time gone? I know, it went w/ all the other kitchy, time wasting, buzz worthy rest of the crap on the internet that this video has spawned. You're welcome, world.

Let's reminisce:

I am so happy not to live in NYC (sorry Ed Post)

Oh NYC. Oh, LCD Soundsystem. Oh, oh, OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH. I get it now....courtesy of the good peeps at The Daily Swarm:

I read your comments on the LCD fiasco. All the fans think there is a conspiracy. There might be but NOT where you think it is coming from. Try this order of events and follow the logic.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy | Haiti benefit 10" at SAKI

Some of you know him as Will Oldham (musician), Will Oldham (actor), a part of the Continental Op , or simply as the (much taller) "Prince". But know this: the man, the myth...he's also a humanitarian of the highest degree. So much so that the proceeds of his February 22nd upcoming 10" release with The Cairo Gang "Island Brothers" b/w "New Wonder" go to EDGE OUTREACH's efforts to provide pure water & education in Haiti. There's even a video for the cause, and even Pitchfork caught word of it (naturally, only between posts about Jeff Mangum).

Bonnie lets Wyclef dream of a Haitian presidential run & while he and DC roll up those shirt-sleeves to lend a hand. Both classy and nice. You should, too.

Snow parking in chicago can (really) suck it (now).

Dear Chicagoan,
It's a slippery slope to douchebag, but honestly, how long is it going to take for you to give back something that wasn't yours to take in the first place? Is there a time line for how long after a storm you can continue to "reserve" a public parking spot? Let's pretend, just for the sake of argument, that it was acceptable for you to throw paint buckets, 2x4s, lawn chairs, broken televisions, strollers, and whatever other garbage you had in your basement, into the street to stake your claim on a piece of public property. How long is it going to take for you to pull up your d-bag flag and let someone else park in front of your goddamn house? Odds are the reason your garbage is in a spot instead of your car is because you drove to work this morning in a different neighborhood, where you were forced to go in circles, because all of those assholes still want to make sure they don't have to walk more than ten steps from their car to their front door when the working day is done. It's a cycle of false entitlement and unnecessary frustration, and if it was just a bed you made for yourself to lay in, I wouldn't be complaining. However, in case you hadn't noticed, you're not the only person who lives in this city. The snow's melting, why don't you try letting that meaty thing that used to beat in your chest do the same?

Also, if it isn't too much trouble, on the road back from complete prick to human being, could you please take your trash back into your home or dispose of it properly. Thank you.

Sincerely,
From Another City With (Apparently) Less Assholes

In-store: California Wives w/ Santah!

Join us next sunday at 4pm for an in-store set from local indie-pop shoegazers California Wives. They have that "New Band Smell." Which, I think, is a good thing, though it sounds stinky.

They'll be joined by one of our new local favs, Santah. Check out those live acoustic videos on their MySpace and you'll fall in love.

You can check out some tracks from California Wives here, and Santah right here. Or you can just take our word that they're both totally awesome and you're gonna loooove 'em!

Chicago Mixtape

One of the cooler ideas for promoting local music that I've come across recently is Chicago Mixtape. It's pretty simple, and very cool. Just enter your e-mail and you'll get weekly digital mixtapes in your inbox from local Chicago artists. If you sign up before midnight tonight, you'll also get their bonus starter mix. The official launch for Chicago Mixtape is tomorrow. Check it out!

Disappears: Live @ Echo Canyon

If you missed Disappears' live show at The Empty Bottle last week, well, you shouldn't have. We made it really easy for you. But, if you did, you'll have another chance to hear the "gnarled, hard-hitting, ear-bursting [sound of a] Disappears live show" come March. Only this time it will be on a cassette tape...

PlusTapes is putting out Live At Echo Canyon for your listening pleasure on 3/8. It includes a cover of Suicide's "Radiation" which you can hear over at Decibel Tolls. From the sound of that one, this is going to be one of those tapes that actually sounds right on cassette.

Find it at saki in a few Tuesdays!

Party?

The world's strongest beer, with a whopping 41% alcohol content, has just hit the market.

You probably won't find it at your local pub just yet, but check out this warning on the label:

'This is an extremely strong beer; it should be enjoyed in small servings and with an air of aristocratic nonchalance - in exactly the same manner that you would enjoy a fine whisky, a Frank Zappa album or a visit from a friendly yet anxious ghost.'

I think that says it all.

Official Opening: Enter The Den of The Rocktopus

ENTER THE DEN OF THE ROCKTOPUS
WORKS OF MATT ENLOE @ saki
Opening Friday, February 11, 6-9pm
Hors d'oeuvres and beverages provided by saki.

Join us this Friday from 6-9pm for the official opening of "Enter The Den of The Rocktopus" Works of Matt Enloe @ saki! Matt will be joined by local purveyor's of hip-hop-minded funk, Roadside Poetics, acting as musical guest. They will perform at 8pm. Beverages & hors d'oeuvres, as always, will be provided by saki.

Matt Enloe employs mixed media to create pieces that would appropriately accent the walls of your favorite dive bar, but would be just as home adorning a woodsman's den. His work implores a satirical sense of humor that can be seen in his use of color, subject matter, and prerogative.

Artist's Statement:
If Rasputin and Foxy Brown had a child it would be the Rocktopus. The Rocktopus is everything your grandfathers fought and died for. The Rocktopus is pure aggression and whimsy, like if Rodney Dangerfield and Calamity Jane got it on and had an eight-limbed harbinger of doom and delight. The Rocktopus is the mascot for the new Renaissance Man. No longer shall the Rocktopus sit idly by. It is time for action and that’s what the Rocktopus is all about. Bred by The Good Doctor Enloe and raised on a combination of the Good Doctors sweat, blood and love of golden age comics, the Rocktopus has begun to climb its way out of the murky depths and into the hearts and minds of the youth and soon the world.

FATTY FATCAKES THE FAT SNOW MAN

This guy needs to lay off of the late night cheeseburgers. From my neighborhood (Albany Park).

This is my street. Oh, City of Chicago....when will you plow? Or are you eating too many late night cheeseburgers, too? Of course, how could our mayor be wrong in his assessment of how the city has done with regard to snow plowing. It's likely that we'll run through the 3.whatever million dollars set aside for dealing with snow for the entire 2011 calendar year, but whatevs, he's out in May, so what does he care. Of course, I'd petition that if he really wanted to spend time w/his ill wife....well, then....just....leave (you douchebag).

Nice view, eh?

Snow parking in Chicago can suck it.

Only in Chicago, would folks adopt the "I touched it, therefore it's MINE" policy when it comes to parking in the snow. If Chicago were imagined as a little child in elementary school, Chicago would be the most spoiled and self-serving runt of the litter. Hmmmm....parking, super important. Shelter, food, clothing...c'mon let's get back to more important issues, like this plastic chair marking my parking spot. Thick. Thick with hubris. For what? For digging out a car. BTW, thanks to all of the assholes who shoveled their cars out...dumping the snow into the street. Classy. You make me proud not to be you, related to you, or know you. Cuz if I did, I'd want to kill you for being so unbareably selfish.

CTD exclusive label Addenda owner/CHIRP DJ/all around good friend Dustin Drase wears many hats, there's not much he doesn't do in the music scene currently. He also makes mean mix tape packaging. Before there was Addenda, there was his cassette only label Plustapes. Today, Plustapes was featured on WBEZ's Eight-forty-eight, with an interview w/ Drase. Listen to the interview here. The interview was conducted by renowned Chicago music writer and my friend Althea Legaspi, as well. This link is brimming w/ awesomeness. I'm sorry, I mean, anything except Glee.

Oh, and Mad Men, whatever that is.
