CTD Press Update 6/28/11!

CTD Press Update 06/28/2011
Now Available Exclusively/Semi Exclusively from CTD:

Please note: CTD will be closed Friday, July 1st, reopening for regular business hours on Tuesday, July 5th.

FEATURED:

Cliffie Swan
“Memories Come True”
Drag City: dc451

PITCHFORK 7.3!!:
“Just as the disc's knotty pop lead-in often calls to mind Fleetwood Mac without ever quite going full McVie, there's something about this mid-LP mix of vocal serenity and bleary guitar crunch that suggests they've been rummaging around in the mid-90s buzzbin. But they've gotten so good at couching even their more obvious influences in threads of ambling melody that any easy comparisons seem somehow beside the point. That's a big shift from Rites, an album that seemed most impressive for the derring-do of its genre-stacking. Echoes of everything from the Breeders to Black Sabbath may ring throughout Memories now and again, but there's a serenity and self-possession driving these tunes that isn't on loan from any other band.”

COMING SOON!
Com Truise
“Galactic Melt”
Ghostly International: gi138

XLR8R Preview of “Polyhurt”:

PITCHFORK Forkcast of “Polyhurt”:
“...Seth Haley, aka Com Truise, is gearing up to release the "Fairlight" single via new label Ghostly International on May 3. "Polyhurt" is one laser-cut slice from it.”

URB - TOP 10 DETROIT ACTS YOU HAVEN’T HEARD:
“...now is a great time to be catching Seth Haley’s Com Truise project. His mix of downtempo breaks with some of the spaciest synths to be found produces auditory sci-fi.”

LOS ANGELES TIMES:
“It conjures a Macintosh nostalgia for futures dreamed up decades ago. Synthesizers bright as lasers and drums loose as dust....Ideal summer music.”

Cliffie Swan + Pitchfork = 7.3

Not sure how that math works, but thank the lightning and tornado filled skies it does!

Long ago, there was a band called Lights. They changed their name to Cliffie Swan (lots of people change their names, so clam it, bub!) and Drag City have released Memories Come True on LP/CD. Pitchfork awoke from a lengthy Bon Iver induced slumber, and gave it a 7.3, among other accolades ~

"Memories' first three songs prove its most immediately ingratiating; after 'Chain', the husky 'Soft and Mean" gets a little snarl going -- Knapp's cooly delivered kiss-off of, 'you know, your attitude, it really wrecks my mood,' cuts to the quick-- and the Cars-like 'Yes I Love You' strips things back so far the hook can't help but jut out. They may be making fewer moves on these lean, chorus-heavy tunes than they did flitting between styles on Rites, but they seem more confident in each one."

"Just as the disc's knotty pop lead-in often calls to mind Fleetwood Mac without ever quite going full McVie, there's something about this mid-LP mix of vocal serenity and bleary guitar crunch that suggests they've been rummaging around in the mid-90s buzzbin. But they've gotten so good at couching even their more obvious influences in threads of ambling melody that any easy comparisons seem somehow beside the point. That's a big shift from Rites, an album that seemed most impressive for the derring-do of its genre-stacking. Echoes of everything from the Breeders to Black Sabbath may ring throughout Memories now and again, but there's a serenity and self-possession driving these tunes that isn't on loan from any other band."

"Cliffie Swan's airy melodic excursions might be several degrees less daring than Lights' exploratory pop-psych, it's both easier to like and easier to grok."

I'll give anyone a dollar who will define "grok". **

** one Monopoly dollar.

Bleached 7"

New Art Fag single forthcoming from former members of California punk combo Mika Miko.

"Bleached carries on the MM tradition of freewheeling punk spirit with a nu slant toward the 60s and Ramones style bubblegum. "

Think of You by Art Fag Recordings

Sounds goo ooo ooo ood to me.

I heart Mekons. I really do.

If there's anything that is undeniable in this life, is that rain is most certainly wet, and that the MEKONS are one of the best, longest running, self-contained bands in history. Dependably incredible (and I mean incredible) live, and thoroughly educating to see how they operate 30 years into their career, they've announced a new album....and they're relaunching the Sin Records Label they ran between 1985 & 1988! Hot damn!

Can. Not. Wait.

Segall, Ty
“Goodbye Bread”
Drag City: dc479
PITCHFORK 8.1!:
“In Goodbye Bread, his first full-length for Drag City, Segall has embraced singer-songwriter craft wholeheartedly. While garage rock O.G.s like the Troggs and the Stooges continue to be an influence, Segall has turned in a relatively calm effort here, choosing to downshift into slower tempos and cleaner sounds, evoking instead the work of John Lennon, Neil Young, and Marc Bolan. Heavyweights. But what makes Goodbye Bread such a success is that we get an even keener sense of what a Ty Segall song sounds like and what that means.”

welcome back, Idaho

Jeff Martin's first new album since 2005's The Lone Gunman is out next week!

Ty Segall "Goodbye Bread" gets 8.1 on Pitchfork

We here at Saki/CTD, Ltd. have been familiar with Ty Segall for a while now, from his albums & 7-inchers on Goner, Trouble In Mind and a host of others, to his new album on Drag City, "Goodbye Bread"....and wouldn'tcha know it, Pitchfork.com, just awarded an 8.1 to our boy, Ty.
Here's what the Fork has to say ~

"In Goodbye Bread, his first full-length for Drag City, Segall has embraced singer-songwriter craft wholeheartedly. But what makes Goodbye Bread such a success is that we get an even keener sense of what a Ty Segall song sounds like and what that means."

"Goodbye Bread is filled with such rich, breathtaking moments, and Segall, who plays every instrument here, sounds as though he's savoring every part of process. On the slightly creepy 'You Make the Sun Fry', there's joy in how he rhymes 'love me still' with 'your Coupe De Ville.' Same goes for the way he locks together the chiming guitar licks that carry 'I Can't Feel It' home and the thundrous drum fills that punctuate 'My Head Explodes'. It sounds like he's having a blast, excited with every sound and riff he finds, even as he slows down to zoom in on the details."

Last Kind Words @ saki Tonight!!!

saki is privileged to kick off our 1st anniversary party with an exclusive performance from guitar/mandolin duo Last Kind Words! Comprised of Geoff Farina (Karate) and Kenneth Rainey (Tangleweed/Golden Horse Ranch Band), 'their modest aim is neither orthodoxy or artistry, it is enjoying America's finest melodies over coffee on a sunny Sunday morning.' A performance not to be missed, especially for conoisseurs of folk, bluegrass, and Americana! Starts at 7pm. More info here: http://thelastkindwords.com/about/

Marissa Nadler "S/T" LP/CD receives Pitchfork 8.1!!

Let me take you back in time. I promise it won't hurt.

Several months ago, I arrived at work, and within the first few minutes of coffee-chugging and email checking, I received a phone call.
"Hello, this is Marissa Nadler. I'm looking for someone to carry my new record...."

As you probably can imagine, my thought was only "THEE Marissa Nadler?!?!". I'm not immune to such calls, but with only a few sips of coffee at that point, I was a tad, er, uh, surprised. Thankfully, (several sips of coffee later), Marissa and CTD had forged a relationship to carry her label, Box Of Cedar, and her new Kickstarter funded album. Now, Pitchfork.com (who have been no stranger to Marissa's new offering), have given her an 8.1. I love it when things work out **just so**.

Here's what they say ~

"Her looks at love have grown increasingly intricate, subtle and-- most importantly-- realistic since her 2004 debut. Her songs are now much too considered to be only elegiac, too complex to be simply sad. That idea translates musically as well."

"Once again... Nadler has maintained and etched out yet another album of cold, stony truths about the ways we love, or fail to."

"Nadler's songs are frank, careful examinations of all the ways a relationship can grow cold. Her music sounds as somber as ever here, and her distant air remains one of the most absolutely haunting things you're likely to find anywhere near indie rock."

YOU! THERE! IN THE CROWD! WITH THE IPHONE! STOP FILMING THAT CONCERT!

(Pic above of industry big wig who still hasn't figured out that turtlenecks are L-A-M-E.)

In a crazy turn of events (and one I whole heartedly support), iPhone users may soon be stopped from filming at concerts with their iPhones....by Apple technology. Typically, those with phones in the audience, filming it - those lonely souls - should just have their phones knocked out of their hands by other concert goers who's line of sight is blocked by someone with an iPhone. Sure, there are other phones that do this, but at least Apple has officially said what everyone already knows:

"YOU, WITH THE PHONE....YOU ARE ANNOYING. AS IN ANNOYING EVERYONE IN THE ROOM. EVEN THE BAND. PLEASE, GO AWAY. FAR AWAY."

Trivia Night & Beer Draft @ saki 6/24!

Join us at saki on Friday, June 24th from 7-9pm for our first ever Beer Draft and Trivia Night! Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking Beer Draft, yeah, I know what that is, but what's this Trivia thing you speak of? Or is it the other way around. Yeah, it's the other way around. Let me explain!

The Beer Draft is the bastard cousin of the beer exchange. Each participant brings one beer to contribute to the draft field. You most likely won't be drinking the beer you bring, so pick something that you think others might like! When you enter your beer, you will draw a number. That number will be your picking position in the draft. Now hang out and answer some trivia questions and wait your turn! When the time comes you can pick any beer you like from the draft field and enjoy!

To cap off this awesome night we'll have a performance from Dey Industries' Bob Dey's Tank Engine Man.

Let's recap: Beer Draft, Trivia Night and live music! What could be better?

PITCHFORK FORKCAST OF “Pantup”:

EXCLAIM!:
“...if the lead track "Panutup" is like the rest of the album, it will be one unique listening experience.”

SOME KIND OF AWESOME:
“I don't know what the heck is going on in Norway but I do not care. The electronic music that comes out of that country is RIDICULOUS!.”

“Wallahi Le Zein: Wezin, Jackwar & Guitar Boogie From The Islamic Republic of Mauritania”
Locust/Latitude: latitude07

PITCHFORK 8.0!!:
“"Wallahi Le Zein" is somewhat similar to a Sublime Frequencies radio or field recording release, except that this has a much deeper interest in the musicological, historical, and cultural underpinnings of what's going on here. Lavoie isn't just putting this stuff out there for you - the liner notes are an educational document reflecting years of research and real, focused passion for the subject matter, rather than a basic interest in otherness. This is in some ways this compilation's greatest gift - this is the first curated collection of unfiltered Mauritanian guitar music ever, and I'm glad it's been introduced with such thoroughness and care.”

Yes, CongraTulations. You did it. By "it", I mean "nothing"

A pic taken on my drive over lunch today.

CongraTulations are in order, indeed. CongraTulations to Chicago area high school graduates, you are officially dumber than the class of 2010. You did it! Pat yourselves on the back and live out the summer of (what will be) the apex of your existence.

The Spend: Mild Peril LP

The Spend played at saki this past weekend with Shaina Hoffman & Heartichoke. Essentially a solo vehicle of Chicagoan, Matt Shaw, The Spend specializes in the kind of cathartic, spaced out folk songs that skew way more towards space than the earthy Americana that we usually call folk.

Think: Mark Kozelek, think it really, really hard, because The Spend's album Mild Peril certainly owes a huge debt to the Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon progenitor. Rather than being derivative, The Spend creates it's own, ahem, space in the modern folk world. Just trust me, if you like Kozelek, you'll like The Spend.

You can also see (as pictured above) that no expense was spared in the packaging department. It comes in a silk-screened, die-cut jacket, and includes a CD copy in a smaller die-cut, hand-stamped jacket. Listen to the whole album here, and buy it here, or at the shop!

Bill Fox is coming!

Perhaps this has happened before and I shouldn't be so excited, but I'm from the east coast, where shit like this just doesn't happen... BILL FOX, the elusive and enigmatic songwriter from Cleveland is coming to Chicago on July 2nd!

Bill was the frontman for a supposedly legendary Cleveland rock band in the mid-80's called The Mice. The few people who followed them or saw them play compare them to Guided By Voices or The Replacements in their prime, but their stuff is hard to track down so we'll take those random people's word for it. What can be proven is that Bill's solo records Shelter From The Smoke and Transit Byzantium are absolute gem's of the lo-fi singer/songwriter and jangle-pop varieties. This might sound hyperbolic, but if you're a fan of Bob Dylan, Big Star, The Mountain Goats or Guided By Voices, you'll dig Bill's solo stuff.

Come pick up Shelter From The Smoke if you don't already own it, and we'll see you at Uncommon Ground on July 2nd!

Nethfriends: Angry East Coast 7"

Come pick up a copy of Netherfriends' Angry East Coast 7"! This is (I think) the first collection of songs from Netherfriends' ultimate goal of touring the entire United States on bike, and writing a song for each state.

Angry East Coast includes songs for PA, DC (not a state, but whatever), and motherfriggin' Delaware! The 7" comes packaged in an informational booklet with photos and details about stops on the tour.

Mail order the 7" here and Netherfriends' Barry & Sherry LP here, OR pick them up at the shop any ol' time.

An American Trilogy: Mickey Newbury Pitchfork Best New Reissue

Nashville and country music in general owe a huge debt to Mickey Newbury. Pitchfork.com understands this - and demonstrates the knowledge about Drag City's truly amazing 4xCD box set An American Trilogy by awarding it with and 8.6 review and their Best New Reissue tag. A few choice words ~

"...An American Trilogy reveals Newbury's complex approach to songwriting and album sequencing: Every word or line or stanza or song complements the others and shades their meanings, contributing crucially to the whole. On all of these albums, his songs shift and melt into other songs, creating thoughtful medleys and often devastating juxtapositions"

"These three LPs are all heady concept albums of a sort, sequenced to create and sustain a particular mood of grievous loss and precarious composure. Newbury conceived them specifically as a trilogy examining his own romantic past as well as the country's contentious history, and 40 years later, they sound just as imaginative, evocative, and emotional as ever."

And FEAR NOT(!) compact disc haters ~ you can bask in the glory of Mickey Newbury's America on LP as well. Sold individually, Drag City has also released these **absolute classics** on vinyl:

It's no Ludacris rapping at the Country Music Awards, that's for sure....and thankfully so!

Yet another reason Buzz from the Melvins is a genius

A few notable quotes from Buzz Osborne, he, of one of the greatest bands in history (go ahead, argue this point, everyone has to be wrong sometime), THE MELVINS ~ courtesy of Impose magazine, via the dailyswarm.com, who are some good peoples.

"I hate the old and feeble anyway and I REALLY hate them on airplanes. I hate children anyway and I REALLY hate them on airplanes. I hate the handicapped. I hate the fact that they can get on the plane before me but I love that they have to get off last. Ha! I hate babies. I hate people who make babies. I hate airport mom. I hate airport dad. I hate public breast feeding. I hate baby food. I hate strollers. I hate kids running wild in airports. I hate kids on kid leashes. I hate airport crying. I hate the constant screaming. I hate that parents can't beat their heathen children to death if need be in airports."

Someone get this man on the presidential ballot for 2012. I **really** like his views. A LOT.

Antietam by Dmitry Samarov

Dmitry Samarov is a modern renaissance man - artist, blogger, cab driver, and all of those things it seems, he does well. What makes a good cab driver? I would say someone who knows how to get you where you're going at the cheapest rate and doesn't scream into his own blue tooth while he gets you there. A good artist? Well, that's subjective, I suppose, but we certainly like Dmitry's work! And a good blogger... that takes consistency, humor, and at least a remedial command of the written word. Dmitry's blog, HACK: Stories From A Chicago Cab, is one of the best reads you'll find online. Soooo, check, check, and CHECK!

Keep your eyes peeled for a possible upcoming art show by Dmitry at saki sometime in the fall, and for now, check out his sketches, including this one from last nights Antietam record release show at the almighty Hideout.

Tara Key is on a roll!

Musician and visual artist, Tara Key is on a roll as of late. She's got an amazing new show going up at saki right now - the official opening is tomorrow night - and a show with her band's Antietam and Rizzo/Key at The Hideout on Saturday!

The opening of ELEMENTAL by Tara Key starts at 6pm tomorrow night with beverages and hors d'oeuvres provided by saki. Come see how Tara has transformed our space onto a living, breathing, piece of art.

Then join us on Saturday for Antietam's record release show at The Hideout with Rizzo/Key and The Horse's Ha!

Basically, Tara is going to stream roll the Chicago art and music scenes, so brace up! Check out what Greg Kot has to say about Tara's work here.
