New Local Artist Release!!!

This is the first of a series Carbon Tigers plans on releasing monthly entitled the Dover Sessions. The Majority of these songs as well as the rest to come are all recorded in the home of some of the members off Dover st. in Uptown. You can Listen to the two new tracks here.

The band's next show will be at the Metro with Cold War Kids and Gold Motel for an Event called Nelarusky, a yearly event thrown to help support and donate to the Special Olympics. Although the show is sold out, you can still get tickets by donating here.

Aquarium Drunkard & The Shakes

Here's another reason to love Aquarium Drunkard.

"The Shakes, from the small town of Athens, AL are a slice of the real; an unhinged, and as of yet unsigned, blues-based soul outfit fronted by a woman armed with a whole lotta voice and a Gibson SG." more

Thanks for the heads up. That's some good stuff.

God's approval rating. Yep, GOD's.

In addition to newsertainment, CNN has begun a religion/faith section on their website. Apparently, GOD's (as in the Holy One, the pie in the sky, the be-all-end-all, et al.,) approval rating is at 52%.

I personally want to give a 0% approval rating to anyone who gave God a 52% approval rating.

And I would give CNN an approval rating of "Shut up".

Bathetic Records

saki & CTD now carry some killer titles from Bathetic Records! The Asheville, NC-based label currently has releases by Bitchin' Bajas, (saki in-store alum.) Angel Olsen, High Wolf, Wet Hair among others. Stop in and check them out.

CTD Press Update 07/26/2011
Now Available Exclusively/Semi Exclusively from CTD:

FEATURED:

Newbury, Mickey
“The American Trilogy (4xCD Box Set)”
“Looks Like Rain”
“Frisco Mabel Joy”
“Heaven Help The Child”
“Better Days”
Drag City: dc485, dc474, dc475, dc476, dc477
ROLLING STONE 4/5:
“His grainy vocal tenderness in San Francisco Mabel Joy evokes the combined haunting of Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake, while An American Trilogy is, in Newbury's grip, patriotic anguish for a country at war with itself.”
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/an-american-trilogy-box-set-20110621

PITCHFORK BEST NEW REISSUE 8.6!!:
“Every word or line or stanza complements the others and shades their meanings, contributing crucially to the whole.”
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15473-an-american-trilogy/

MOJO 4 STARS:
“Three of his early albums, possibly his best, are collected here in a lovingly conceived box set.”
http://www.mojo4music.com

UNCUT - REISSUE OF THE MONTH (JUNE 2011):
“The least his memory deserves is to hear the songs the way he heard them, and this set represents a chance that should be seized lustily...An overdue monument to an overlooked songwriter.”
http://www.uncut.co.uk/

THE WIRE:
“His songs feel like prayers for the brokenhearted many, as if he has consigned himself to perpetual heartache to imbue the songs with a crueler reality.”
http://www.thewire.co.uk

RECORD COLLECTOR:
“This exquisite collection offers a more fitting context for Newbury’s neglected recordings - once heard, forever smitten. It’s impossible to resist the emotional pull of his voice and artistry.”
http://www.recordcollectormag.com/reviews/review-detail/6973

NO DEPRESSION:
“There is only one word that comes to mind for making this package so detailed, so intimate, and so passionate in the little things that made Newbury’s music so endearing to those who got it - and that word is Love.”
http://www.nodepression.com/profiles/blogs/an-american-trilogy-mickey

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER:
“An American Trilogy is an excellent introduction to the mind and music of Mickey Newbury. The three albums contained here form the highlights of an often overlooked career that is well worth resurrecting.”

UPCOMING SOON:

Cronin, Mikal
“Mikal Cronin”
Trouble in Mind: tim031
CITIZEN DICK.com
“Just like his work with Segall, Cronin's LP promises a collection of gritty and attitude-laden garage rock. I've professed my undying adoration for Segall's Goodbye Bread too many times to count on this here blog. I'm already considering this album a perfect counterpart for the second half.”
http://citizendick.org/2011/07/25/mikal-cronin-apathy-mp3/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+CitizenDick+%28Citizen+Dick%29&utm_content=Twitter

ALTERED ZONES
“Opening itself up wider with each play, this is a good record in the truest sense of the word.”
http://alteredzones.com/posts/1682/mikal-cronin-apathy/

RAVEN SINGS THE BLUES.com
“Cleaner than we've heard him in a long time, the record packs a huge whollop in its three-minute garage-pop punches. Scraping its way through fuzz, jangle, slow burn motions and even a few psychedelic breakdowns, the record is nothing if not infectious; opening itself up wider with each play.”

Meet The New Boss. Same as the Old Boss.

Dear Mayor Emmanuel,
Stop being such a fucking baby, and answer the question. You are not king-shit of fuck mountain.

Rahm, man that I voted for....when will you learn? Being Mayor isn't all fun, and I would've figured that having been in DC for a while, you have fielded difficult questions that were a tad uncomfortable. Why wouldn't you answer a simple question - if you're children go to public school. It's a legitimate question....especially given the fact that Chicago's education rate is so horrible. All he would've had to say is "No, my children, because I make enough money to do so, are sent to a private school." Sure, it's not the best answer and an admonition that he himself has no faith in the Chicago Public School System, but it's an honest answer a helluva lot better than getting up and leaving LIKE PARIS HILTON JUST DID WHEN ASKED IF HER 15 MINUTES WERE UP. Yeah, the privileged and the beautiful...they act the same. Like spoiled babies.

I wonder if, when asked "Do you live close to the Chicago River?" if he'll get up and leave that interview. I'd be irate, since my place has flooded due to the inability of Chicago to solve it's economic issues and fix the underground water-works/sewage system that they started on in the 90s, then abandoned for no good reason.

What a total FUCKER this guy is. Sure he as a temper. I bet it's placated by the swank job he just quit and the swank job he just took. Me? I've taken a pay cut, but I answer simple questions. Politicians....can't live with 'em, can't set them on fire. In public. While hanging them upside down by their toes. And beating them like a pinata.

Just curious, what happens when your wife asks a question you don't like? Do you leave her, too? Or do something even worse?

Impeach Obama on Road Sign. How Original!

I still haven't figured out how to construct a sign reading "Go Fuck Yourself" - which I would put in front of whoever thought it was a good idea to waste taxpayer's money in NC by making an "Impeach Obama" road sign. By NC, I mean North Caccalacci. But, yes, whoever you are, you are both original, clever and funny.

By original, clever and funny, I mean simple, shortminded and stupid.

Babies. Little Babies.

Back in about 2008-, while I worked at Touch and Go, we distributed a video called Building a Broken Mousetrap by The Ex, filmed by indie filmmaker extraordinare, Jem Cohen. Though we had no account or direct relationship with Netflix, we did what any distributor would for any release - we not only solicited the local mom-n-pops, but we also solicited all of our distributors. These distributors, in turn, solicit their customer base(s). Netflix was in one of those customer bases, apparently and needless to say, Jem Cohen wasn't too pleased that Netflix was renting his film. He reasoned this logic -

- Netflix buys three copies of your DVD for $10.00 each. You/your label make $30.00 to split between you and your artist(s).

- Netflix then rents one of those 3 DVDs that they purchased from you 50,000 times each at a (for instance) monthly plan of 2 DVDs per month for $8.99 each. This makes each DVD in the plan around $4.50 each. Netflix (not the label, the filmmaker, not the artist, and certainly not any of the staff for the film) make $225,000.00 from the purchase of 1 DVD from you. Let's say they rent each of those 3 DVDs in the same plan, but to3 different customers. Netflix has made $675,000.00 from the purchase of 3 DVDs from you. I bet the water coolers at Netflix are made of the finest polished marble stones.

- Sure, this is more than wrong. Granted, Blockbuster did this renting movies as well, as did many video rental shops, and for nearly 30 years. So has your local record store when they sell used LPs/CDs/Cassettes/DVDs. Only the shop makes the money from an item sold - that in many ways, is still owned (copyright/publishing) by the label or artist. Neither labels or bands did anything to combat this, as used sales were seen as helping mom-n-pop shops simply exist. And your local record shop and local video store weren't marketing to the world, as a mailorder company.

- The reason no one cares/thought about this, is that the majority of films released on Netflix are made by Hollywood studios, or are at least, well funded documentaries, etc., and no one really cares if (for example) Brad Pitt doesn't make an extra $225,000.00 on the rentals of his newest movie. Anyone would reason that he has enough money, children, adopted children, etc. But bands and independent filmmakers are no Brad Pitt. They operate on shoestring budgets, and what Netflix provides to their customers.

That said, the notice that Netflix has raised their pricing deals, and that Sony has taken all of their streaming movies from the site, I find to be PARTICULARLY AWESOME. Many Netflix users have complained about this change. AND THEY ARE ALL BABIES. Granted, Sony is likely in talks (ie: contract negotiations) and their streaming content will reappear soon. (Insert pacifier in mouth, now).

Seriously, people. Sure, the service provided by Netflix is changing. Just like life. They are a business out to make money (to continue to exist to provide you service to complain about, when it changes - and it always will). Either cancel your subscription, keep it, with the knowledge that you're participating in ripping off those that you admire. It's an American pasttime at this point.

Marissa Nadler ~ Pitchfork Guest List 07/13/2011

Earlier this summer (the best summer ever), CTD and Box of Cedar Records released Marissa Nadler's self-titled, Kickstarter-funded LP/CD. And look at the big brain on Brett....Pitchfork has interviewed Ms. Nadler, asking about her faves (records, film, radio, tv, etc.). Take a gander. Get enlightened. Then with that enlightenment, buy Marissa's record and share with the world.

We can all make a difference, one LP at a time - starting with this one....

Mid-Year Mantra, 2011

Here we are, just beyond mid-year, 2011, in this, what could be (for the 3rd time), our last year on Earth. To celebrate our impending doom (or simply, our miniscule & relatively unimportant role in the cycle of the universe), I've listed my favorite releases thus far in 2011. By no means is this a top ten. Just the cream thus far in 2011.

1. Bloodiest / Descent (Relapse)
2. Implodes / Black Earth (Kranky)
3. Milk Music / Beyond Living (self-released)
4. Shaved Women / EP (Rotted Tooth)
5. Dead Rider / The Raw Dents (Tizona)
6. Battles / Gloss Drop (Warp)
7. Double Negative / Daydreamnation (Sorry State)
8. TV Ghost / Mass Dream (In The Red)
9. My Disco / Little Joy (Temporary Residence)
10. Earth / Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I (Southern Lord)

Honorable mention to Skull Defekts / Peer Amid (Thrill Jockey), Birth / S/T (Dead Beat) and Low / C'mon (Sub Pop).

Cinemagraphs: From Me To You

It's 2011 and everyone loves a good .gif, right? They're easy to make, amusing and often involve cats, or James Vanderbeek hamming it up, so what's not to like...?

The folks at From Me To You may have taken the .gif to the level of high art with their "cinemagraphs." Again, these are simple images, but they're often more mesmerizing than funny.

My Morning Jacket - Circuital

If you haven't heard the new album, you are missing out! My Morning Jacket has taken a new approach to the way they recorded this record. See what Rolling Stone magazine has to say about it here.

Adrian Younge: Venice Dawn FREE EP

Adrian Younge is a hip-hop producer turned orchestral mastermind. He's probably best known for his score to the 2009 blaxsploitation film, Black Dynamite.

Venice Dawn
is a piece that predates his Black Dynamite work, and is actually a sort of film score itself - an italian horror film score that is. The EP was originally pressed in a run of 1,000 and sold personally by Younge in the LA area. Now the venerable Wax Poetics has released it as a free EP download in anticipation of an upcoming debut full-length called Something About April

Bill Callahan: America video

It feels like it's been at least a few weeks since we've had a Bill Callahan post on the saki blog. It's not that we're not still injecting Apocalypse intravenously - we certainly are. We just felt like we should lay off for a bit and give you guys a chance to take the album in. She's a doozy, and if you're not already a Callahan fan, can take some time to wrap your head around. Well, thank God Bill has teamed up with Austin art collective Okay Mountain to make a video for what could be the most idiosyncratic tune on the album - America... and I'm a fanboy all over again.

More Love for Com Truise. No love for Tom Cruise.

Here at CTD, we frequently discuss various topics during the days knuckle-busting events, and sometimes we even agree (don't tell anyone), and even occasionally hug-it-out. But, that's a story for another time.

Check out this post on the Daily Swarm about Com Truise ~ very much in the same fashion as our daily wordplay around the office, Truise (nea Seth Haley) dishes about some of his faves, firsts, and most memorable moments. Com Truise recently released his Pitchfork approved Galactic Melt 2xLP/CD on Ghostly International, to boot. Dig in, already ~

...on his looks ~
"I look like a bear cub."

...his favorite films ~
"I’m a big promoter of Bladerunner."

...some of his favorite records ~
"Listening to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon: it makes me feel like I’m inside the music, walking around on clouds."

…on day jobs ~
"…two weeks ago, on a Tuesday. I went to my boss’s office and said, 'I love it here, and thanks for everything, but I’m going on tour.' He looked it me, gave me a hug, and said, 'I knew it was going to happen, but I didn’t know it wasn’t going to happen this soon.'"

And as promised, a jab at Tom Cruise. Why not.

Grouper : I Saw A Ray

Grouper - I Saw A Ray from Weston Currie on Vimeo.

Part I of a series of videos adapted from/inspired by A | A

PARTY TIME BEGINS NOW.

Call your neighbors! Wake up your friends! FINALLY! Some good news in this, our Music Industry!
(Courtesy of the LA Times via theDaily Swarm, who appreciate good news just as much as the ludicrous news....as if all news isn't ludicrous in the first place...).

"Overall music sales -- encompassing albums, singles, music video and digital tracks -- are up 8.5% over last year at this time.

An irony, however, is that although album sales have been bolstered this year by sales of blockbusters from superstar artists such as Lady Gaga and Adele, the net gain is more due to strong response to sales of older albums -- those released 18 months ago or earlier.

Catalog album sales showed a 7% hike, which offset a 4% drop in sales of current albums. Album sales generate the biggest chunk of the record industry’s total revenue year in and year out. Among the 10 bestselling catalog albums were a smattering of fresher names, such as Adele and Miranda Lambert, but hits collections from Journey and Credence Clearwater Revival were also on the chart.

The digital domain continued making headway, with digital albums up 10% over the midyear point in 2010, and digital track sales increasing 11% so far this year.

Vinyl LPs also continue to show a strong resurgence, even though the total portion of music sales is small -- 1.9 million out of 221.5 million total albums sold to date this year -- but the percentage jumped 41% over 2010."

URB 4/5:
“Galactic Melt manages to be both dark and upbeat at the same time. It’s filled with well-composed and highly aesthetic tracks. Com Truise makes synthetic and emotional music, nostalgic and spaced out like a German or Russian Sci-fi score, and the songs melt into each other without sounding repetitive and recycled. 10 tracks of pure seamless joy.”

4th of July + fireworks + Com Truise + Pitchfork 7.3 = Galactic Brain Melt

Ahh, fireworks…the sounds of explosions just before the dawn. Always nice. Know what else is always nice? As in "NIIIIICE"? Ghostly International's Com Truise is. Seth Haley (nea Com Truise) received a 7.3 for Galactic Melt 2xLP/CD on Pitchfork this very morning. Further KA-POW!s below:

"…with its staccato, bonus level synth stabs, keening psychedelia and 1980s-drenched drum sounds, Melt is still very identifiably Truise."

"He's something of a cottage industry, dispensing original tracks, remixes, podcasts, and accompanying boxfresh graphic designs to his blog readership and Twitter followers with impressive regularity. By capitalizing on the immediacy of the formats, he's also charting his own evolution in realtime. When he writes, 'I thought I'd switch it up a little' in reference to a remix he's just posted for Ana Lola Roman's Klutch, he's acknowledging that his listeners know what he means by 'it,' and how it's been switched; everything is laid out with a clear progression, one small evolution to the next."

Pish Posh #5 is July 23rd @ saki!

Here it comes, Pish Posh #5 at saki! It feels like it's been forever since we've seen our friends from Another New Calligraphy and we're so excited to have them back. Here's the details, via their website (because they write more gooder than us):

Adorn yourself in the finest of fineries: it's Pish Posh!! The theme of our little gala this time is "side projects." The lovely ladies of Coins will be keeping it real for the Sybris and Reds & Blue fans in attendance. Dheeru and Maria from ANC's very own A Light Sleeper will be looping and showtuning and being wonderful and lowercased, just as you knew they could. Katie Ziolkowski performs as Katie Ziolkowski when the other members of Katie Ziolkowski are away at camp, and Thomas Mundt is a side project of Charlton Heston's specter. There you have it, friends!
