CTD Press Update 2/28/12!

CTD Press Update 02/28/2012
Now Available Exclusively/Semi-Exclusively from CTD:

FEATURED:
Disappears
"Pre Language"
Kranky: krank164

SONIC CATHEDRAL:
“There’s not a wasted moment on this record – it’s just nine tracks of magnificently malevolent garage drone magic.”
http://www.soniccathedral.co.uk/2012/02/pre-language/

AQUARIUS RECORDS:
“This is a reminder that sometimes the things that actually sound the most mean and menacing are the ones that don't try so hard to put on an act, but instead just kick out bombastic songs with full on conviction. Something really refreshing these days about a band who channel their intensity with full on punk spirit, for focused and furious sounding results.”
http://aquariusrecords.org/cat/newest.html

CULTURE CRITIC:
“The Chicago collective return with an energetic follow up to 2010's Guider. Subtle it ain’t but neither is it lacking in depth - overdriven crunch guitars roll over accented, meandering bass-lines and unrelenting drums to create a punchy sound reminiscent of The Stooges.”
http://www.culturecritic.co.uk/recorded/disappears-pre-language/

ALTERNATIVE MATTER:
“Disappears has produced a momentous release in Pre Language that already vies for album of the year. It infiltrates and manipulates the senses to thrill and inspire whilst pushing the post punk envelope using incisive and stimulating ingenuity.”
http://alternativematter.net/reviews/disappears-pre-language

PITCHFORK premier of “Replicate”:
“Pre Language is the new album from Chicago noisemakers Disappears; it's out March 1 via Kranky. Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley is behind the kit for this one; the album was recorded with John Congleton (Cymbals Eat Guitars, St. Vincent) at SY's Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, New Jersey. 'Replicate' is the psych-heavy leading cut off the album.”

CTD Press Update 02/21/2012
Now Available Exclusively/Semi-Exclusively from CTD:

FEATURED:
Wild Belle
"Keep You"
Wild Belle/Sandhill Sound: shs001

BROOKLYN VEGAN:
“Wild Belle is one of Chicago's newest bands. They've only played a handful of shows, and so far only released a single song, but it's a good one. Listen to Keep You below and pick up the 12" when it comes out on 2/21.”
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/chicago/2012/01/meet_wild_belle.html

GUARDIAN UK:
“The effect is haunting but naggingly infectious – a double-whammy if ever we heard one. Whether or not the rest of their material will continue in this ethereal-ska vein we have no idea, although attendants at this year's SXSW, where Wild Belle are playing and bound to be one of the buzz-bands, will find out.”
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/feb/15/new-band-wild-belle

PREFIX:
“A steadfast drum-rattle bubbles under dancehall pulses, music-box chimes, and a hearty horn-line. Natalie Bergman’s coo sounds like the idyllic middle-ground between Kate Bush, Lykke Li, Robyn and Lily Allen. It’s basically one of our favorite songs in the world right now.”
http://www.prefixmag.com/media/wild-belle/keep-you/60469/

DONE WAITING:
“NOMO bandleader, Iron & Wine live member and fellow Midwesterner Elliot Bergman has a new project called Wild Belle. Their first single ‘Keep You’ is a sexy dubbed out psychedelic pop jam.”

Charles Bradley 2/18 @ the Metro

metrochicago.com
Despite a handful of 7" releases on Daptone even a voracious music fan might feel like Charles Bradley came out of nowhere. When they find out his first single was released roughly ten years ago, they might stop asking themselves where he's been and start wondering where the hell they've been. Fortunately, since No Time For Dreaming, Bradley's full-length debut and easily one of 2011 best releases, we've all arrived.

In four words you might call him "a male-Sharon-Jones", but the 64 year-old Florida native is far more. Like Daptone's aforementioned empress or local princes J.C. Brooks & The Uptown Sound, Bradley's tapped into the raw emotion and genuine grit of the best original Soul, Funk, and R&B, then framed it all in a contemporary context. It's a beautiful thing when past and present meet this cohesively and successfully.

"In one note, Charles Bradley’s voice mirrors painful plucks to the heartstrings, reminding listeners why this genre was simply, yet powerfully, titled “soul.” Like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett before him, Bradley’s raspy delivery draws all the pain out of the human condition and sends it straight into your eardrum. While the group sounds like it could have been plucked straight from the Motown lineup, the music incorporates bits and pieces of funk and more contemporary rock to keep things fresh." -The A.V. Club Chicago

saki After Hours: Predictive Gaming this Friday!

Predictive Gaming for Substandard Films is an evening of entertainment that incorporates game show elements into a screening of a "so-bad-it's-good" style movie. Halfway between Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Scene It!, Predictive Gaming invites movie fans to place bets on the plot of a campy B-movie throughout the screening in hopes to take home fabulous prizes - like Schubas, Lincoln Hall & Metro guest list spots & saki gift certificates! So as to prevent precocious predictors from premeditating their prizewinning, the film being screened will not be announced in advance, but bad movie fans (and game show enthusiasts) must trust that saki has dug up a real winner!

Predictive Gaming for Substandard Films, the bad movie game show, is Friday, February 17th at 8pm, at saki.

RSVP on the book of faces if you wanna be all social media about it... As with all our events, Predictive Gaming is FREE & BYOB if you've got your ID. And yes, there WILL be popcorn.

The Wettest County In The World by Matt Bondurant

For fans of The Proposition, Assassination of Jesse James..., The Road, or, well, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis & John Hillcoat - they've teamed up again! The Wettest County is an upcoming film directed by Hillcoat with original music from Cave & Ellis, & screenplay by Cave. The screenplay is based on a historical novel by Matt Bondurant called The Wettest County In The World. It is an account of 3 brothers (Bondurant's actual grandfather & great uncles) who ran a bootlegging operation in rural Virginia.

It's pretty much a done deal that this movie will be great, but we highly recommend checking out Bondurant's novel before seeing the film. You can read the New York Times review of the book here and pick up the book at saki for $9.50 now $5.00 (paperback)!

Here's a quandry for all of you/us ~

A label leaks a single early, to generate momentum for a new release. Pitchfork lists said single as "BEST NEW TRACK"....then a few months later, gives the album a poor review.  Interesting....kinda like saying that the sample of the food was delicious, but the rest of the exact same food was not.

Rather than subscribe to the Rolling Stone model where a reviewer builds a following of their own, I'm confidant that Pitchfork purposefully assigns reviews to a broad spectrum of writers, so that one writer will not form a cult of personality around themselves....which I think is quite good, actually, but....I'm confused as to how they justify a BEST NEW TRACK on an album that was reviewed poorly on their site.

For the love of Harry Nilsson - La Blogothèque

For the love of Harry Nilsson - La Blogothèque

A wonderful reflection on Nilsson's life and peculiar musical choices. A singular bloke whose like we shall never again witness.
Through his concessions to the normalcy of existence, with what that implies of dispersion and triviality, Harry Nilsson no doubt lost sight of the sublime pop star career his extraordinary talent as a singer predestined him for; but was granted in exchange the unshakeable love of his kith and kin, and the surprising tendency of his audience to see him not just as a musician, but also as a friend. Pointing to the fact that perhaps, when it comes to artists, we love them all the more for their reluctance to believe that Art trumps all.

Neil Young Meets The Bitter Tears

Neil's got a cool new video on his website while he and Crazy Horse rock out. At least some of it is  "Cortez The Killer". You can check it out here.

In response, the crazy geniuses of The Bitter Tears posted a video response positing Neil of ripping off their idea. Now, I don't know about that. The upload date it pretty recent and The Bitter Tears are known to turn a trip to the pharmacy into an art project. Best part is that you get to hear their cray song, "Hanukkah" in February.

All of this reminds me of Uncle Tupelo, who used to do a killer version of "Cortez" at the end of many of their live shows. I can't track that down for you, but here's the boys playing "Down by the River" in what looks like a high school gym in 1987.

Whaddya want for free? A biscuit?

Black Bananas on Pitchfork (7.8!), Todd Terje on NPR (Song of the Day) and the BEST WORST CHURCH SINGER...EVER.

Oh Lordy! It's Wednesday.  What would Jesus do on a Wednesday?  I'm sure he'd check a few websites first thing in the morning (assuming he will have assimilated to "modern times", that is)....and today he'd find a triple-dose of awesomeness ~

Who said that on the 7th day, he rested?  I propose that on that day, he kicked back a cold one and dropped the needle on the new platter from BLACK BANANAS - the new/old vehicle of Jennifer Herrema (she, of Royal Trux and RTX fame).  Pitchfork speaks the gospel truth - they awarded Rad Times Xpress IV LP/CD with a 7.8 review today.  Lord bless us one and all ~

"The album doesn't so much begin as burst its dam, with opener 'It's Cool' arriving in such a thick surge of wah-wahed guitars and phased-out synths, it takes you a minute to realize the song actually adheres to standard blues structure....Twenty-four years into her musical career and still busting skulls, Jennifer Herrema is not about to let a little rumination on mortality get in the way of a rad time."

After washing down that incredible tid-bit, he'd check out NPR's song of the day (but I doubt he donates during pledge drives) called "Inspector Noise" from TODD TERJE - DJ extraordinare - who's It's The Arps 12" was released in mid January ~

"'Inspector Norse' starts with a cosmic whoosh before settling into a hopping little disco groove."

Amen, brothers, sisters, children, cats, dogs....AMEN.

After the calvalcade of information to his brain, our lord would likely try to relax by watching a YouTube video of some one singing an ode...well, to him.  He's the lord.  Sure he's vain, but hey, wouldn't you be?

Affter watching, he'd cry. Relentlessly.
